I think this is great... “ATAY” only got as high as #5 in airplay, and the time you want to be peaking in airplay is the week the album is released... cool!

Pretty good for a so-called “flop.”

it IS a flop (except in Sweden)

yes, it is a flop. Germany only number 69 :´(

Also #1 this week at Radio Stella...

It’s strange that Robbie Williams is still above Nox although Feel is an ancient song by now...

About Germany: if Simply Red who aren’t that hip anymore either can chart at no. 14 with their new single, why can’t Roxette make it to the top-20?

I don’t own the Simply Red single...but perhaps maybe because the Simply Red single has a more interesting, full tracklisting? And maybe no copy protection?

@ Jason

Don’t you think that people (who aren’t necessarily fans) buy singles because of the A-side song? Not because of “interesting” B-sides...It’s the power of the title track which has gotten the publicity and which people want to take home.

Good point...I guess the casual listener or person who hears the song on the radio and likes it might just buy it for that A side.

Back before Internet music piracy, I would say yes to that question. But nowadays? Not really. Nowadays if people like ONE song, they usually just download it for free from the Internet. Now in the case of the “Opportunity Nox” single, why pay for one song you like when you can’t even rip it to MP3 format for your own personal enjoyment on a disc of your favorite tunes? This leads back to the consumer downloading it for free rather than buying it.

But I think record companies must make singles more appealing to listeners as well. Personally, I’m less inclined to buy a maxi-single that has a lousy 3 tracks and has copy protection than a regular 6-track maxi-single that has remixes, live cuts, and rare b-sides. Even of acts I really don’t know much about or their music, I am more inclined to buy a maxi-single release of their music with an interesting, full tracklisting than if it had a lousy 3 track listing. But maybe that’s just me. :p When I decide on buying music (same goes for albums), I see what’s offered for the price and how much I like the A side or “hit” song.

Which is more interesting?

No copy protection:
1. Opportunity Nox
2. Fading Like A Flower (Live)
3. Crush On You (Almighty Mix)
4. Breathe (Tits & Ass Demo)
5. Opportunity Nox (Tits & Ass Demo)
6. Opportunity Nox (Enhanced Video)

OR

Copy-protection:
1. Opportunity Nox
2. Fading Like A Flower (Live)
3. Breathe (Tits & Ass Demo)

I just don’t understand why things have to be so limited.

Anyway, I rambled...haha

@Jason: I’ve wondered this myself and the only rational explanation I can come up with is that the record company is trying to strike a balance between making the single attractive enough that fans will buy it but not so attractive that the average person will buy the single rather than the album. I’m not so sure this works in Roxette’s case, really, because I suspect it’s mostly the fans that are buying the singles anyway, and they usually buy the album too. I think this is especially true for “ATAY” and “TBH” where it made no sense whatsoever to buy both... if you like “ATAY” and like Roxette in general, the redundant tracklisting should push you to spend a little extra and buy the whole album (which comes with lots of bonus material, anyway). Again, I doubt this works... just my thoughts on this matter!

Interesting perspective there. You may be right on what the record company is thinking (truth is, you never know with EMI/Capitol nowadays!) - although I always looked at record companies including these rare tracks on the singles to influence music lovers to buy the album, which represents more of the act’s work.

Oh well, I guess there’s nothing we can do but complain. LOL. I tend to do plenty of it here regarding the tracklisting of singles and so forth. Perhaps someone is paying attention. I guess I can only hope.

#3 again this week (how the hell did Pink get to #2 with “Family Portrait”?!)

#3 again? Good. P!nk’s “Family Portrait” was a massive radio hit all around the world it seems. It faired “well” in the U.S., by topping out at #20. But internationally, it was bigger. I think #1 airplay hit in Germany as well.
