poor voice quality
darkblade said on March 3, 2003 10:49:
I have watched many performances of Roxette in concert and noticed a very poor voice quality. Marie’s recorded voice is so nice , soft, young, really nice, and Per has a beautiful voice, really great..... but when they sing LIVE, it is a disaster, besides changing too much the music, the tone and rhythm of the songs, Marie’s voice has a very poor quality, it doesn’t seem to be the same person who recorded her voice on studio; her voice sounds ugly, thick , old, as if she is losing air, or blowing a tube as if she is trying to give the most out of a tired throat.....while Per makes no effort to make the beautiful voice he supposedly has......he just sings in the style “whatever comes from my mouth”. is it a luck of effort??? or is it that they do not record their real voices........Mary sounds much older in concert.......

What? Of course there is a difference between singing live and singing in a studio. But old, ugly,...? Listen to love is all live for example and now tell me what´s ugly or old! Are you a fan?

Who’s Mary? ;-)
It’s an absolutely different thing to sing in the studio or in concert. MF is jumping and running all the time, and that for 2 hours.

Seems Ms Darkblade hasn’t heard Madonna, Whitney Houston or Britney Spears (oops...that’d be an impossibility to hear her singing live) singing live. I’d just like to know does any recording artist sing that nicely live? Even Mrs Pro Dion has her weaknesses... And indeed, who is this Mary?

@darkblade...IS THAT A JOKE???
I DEFINITIFELY DON´T AGREE!!! Your comment is STUPID!!!

Fuck! YOu don’t know of music DarkBlade!
We do! That’s why we love Roxette! This is a forum for those people who love Roxette, why are you here?

Sorry darkblade, but you don´t know very much about the music industry and it seems like you´ve never been to a real live concert. No matter in which country do you live; even if you have no chance to attend a Roxette concert you can´t tell something like that about their voices. Their LIVE performance is one of the reasons why they have all the success throughout the years. Even if the success isn´t that big anymore as in the 90ties, but I think they are still a fantastic live band. I´ve seen them a lot of times and was never dissapointed. Here and there Marie forgot the words and maybe sometimes she didn´t reach as high as in the studio song, but who cares, that´s LIVE. If I want to hear the same stuff as on the CD, I´d better stay at home and play the CD instead of going to the concert. Bands who can´t play and sing their songs live won´t survive too long (example Ace of base!), even if their studio productions are great. Jumping/dancing and singing at the same time is not possible; even for Marie. Many other artists do playback and I really appreciate that Roxette aren´t one of those bands. Of course on TV shows it´s playback, but not on the Roxette concerts. Would they have so many people at their concerts if the people would think their voices were poor?

I think you just have to listen to any live performance where Per and Marie AREN’T jumping around all over the place (and there are good acoustics in the building) to know that they CAN sing very well live... compare MTV Unplugged to any of the “Join the Joyride” tour shows. I had the great fortune of seeing Roxette perform in the Virgin Megastore in New York City for a small audience on a small stage (where they couldn’t run around much without hurting each other!) and I was blown away by how well they sang. I think there have been some live vocal performances that shatter the studio performances... “Soul Deep” on the “Joyride” tour and “Crash! Boom! Bang!” on the “C!B!B!” tour, for example... the feeling that you get with a live performance is a thousand times better than anything in the studio... it may not be technically perfect but it can’t be matched.

I think it breaks down to exactly what song they are performing/singing. Listen to the most recent example of “Fading Like A Flower (Live From Brussels)” from 2001. I think Marie’s vocal performance is excellent in that song. That’s because it’s a slow, acoustic ballad. It gives her the chance to actually hit the notes and rest, whereas in an upbeat song, they are usually moving around on stage and of course that affects the breathing and vocals.

oh, my god. maybe you watch (or heard) the wrong into the wrong artist. the reason I like Roxette, because they can sing LIVE.
Hotblooded said on March 4, 2003 05:04:
I totally disagree! I more often than not prefer Marie’s ’live’ voice then the studio one! She has this quality about it that just shines all over, so much heart and emotion! That huskyness and power it’s so much more evident live! Of course she has some shows where she isn’t singing great but that’s what makes a live performance! You never know what u are gonna get!
Listen to ’Soul Deep’ from the Joyride tour or ’Cry’ from the CBB tour and maybe ’Little girl’ from the RS tour and you’ll see why I think she is better live. As for Per well he isn’t a great singer to begin with but I thought he sounded great on the recent RS tour.

as many have said - you can’t compare studio to live. In the studio you have perfect conditions, live they’re running around, accoustics etc. But if you’ve heard marie singing on slower songs such as FLAF and SMT she sounds just as good, if not better than the album versions, especially when it’s just her at the piano. SMT from CBL! is an excellent example & even CBB. i really like there live stuff, i’d just love to see an official release DVD or CD :)

I think its great that they don’t sound the same as the album, even you can hear various concerts from the same tour and all sounds different -BTW- NEVER I’ve heard Marie sing out of tune!!!!-but many singer that seems everybody loves like madonna... Mtv.EMA when she sing “the power of goodbye”...embarrasing
animalkingdom said on March 4, 2003 10:16:
But I have to admit Marie goes just a little out of tune in Lies in Jburg.
darkblade said on March 5, 2003 16:46:
thanks for all your insults, i really appreciate them.........u know, i used to live in Peru, and Roxette went there once.......i didn’t have the chance to attend the concert, but i watched it on tv and Marie’s voice was completely dissapointing, pooooooor quality , ugly , thick, and old, i couldn’t believe what i was hearing, she was not the same person i heard on CD, it sounded very old, she didn’t make any effort to sing at least in an acceptable way.......in two songs maybe u could hear a nice voice......and the same goes for Per, and that is true even if they are just standing up, no running and no jumping, u should watch that performance and u will see........ i also watched like three more performances and in those u can find a bit of improvement but the problem still remains.......i have heard other artists live and they sound exactly like the CD, at least u can say their voice is the same quality......
i like roxette a lot , it is my favorite band, but their live performance really disappointed me........
i am sorry to say this, but when Mary sang IT MUST HAVE BEEN LOVE live in Peru, she sounded like a COW.........
roxtexanet said on March 5, 2003 17:04:
@Darkblade: Have you ever given even the slightest bit of thought to the possibility that the acoustics in an arena of that size are usually horrible and that recording a concert for a Peruvian-only TV broadcast isn’t likely going to use state-of-the-art recording equipment?? I guess the easier explanation is that all of us who HAVE seen Per and Marie perform live (and not just on TV) are just wrong...

darkblade, maybe other acts sound exactly like they do on the cd because their ’performance’ is ripped straight from the tape! :-) and it is maRIE, not mary.
marre said on March 5, 2003 18:09:
Darkblade Why do all you topics always have something negative in it about roxette???
I dont think you are a true roxettefan .I think you post this only to get so many replies as possible.
And before you judge Roxette live you should go and see them relly LIVE. I promise you it is a huge diffrence and you most likly wont be dissapointed.
