You can´t get Rox dvd in Chile? Are you serious? Aren´t they big in South American countries?!
powerpoplarry said on February 24, 2003 10:20:
Not released in the US, Canada or Japan, so no NTSC copies available!! I’m supposedly getting it from a friend in the UK, and I can only play it on my DVD-ROM drive on my computer. A friend of mine, who LOVES Roxette, he can’t watch it on his TV, I can’t bring it over for him to check out!!
Plus, it’s EXPENSIVE!! The price for it in the UK is, like, 20 pounds!! That’s like 35 or 40 bucks!! It’s only 1 disc as well, not a 2-disc set!! Then again, it has 4-5 hours of stuff, so does my David Bowie “Best Of Bowie” DVD, 2 discs, but that costs, normally, 35 bucks, so it might be about equal in content.
Am I right in my feelings and thoughts?? I’m still getting it, just a question on when it arrives...
Stormkeeper said on February 24, 2003 10:28:
that reminds me when someone from another region sent me VHS tape and I couldn´t watch it all... it was all “snowing” if you know what I mean.
powerpoplarry said on February 24, 2003 10:41:
YEP, NTSC vs PAL, exactly. VHS tapes must be converted. Now, only if it was all 1 system, would make things a whole lot easier. Do you think an NTSC DVD of Roxette will ever come out?? Or am I stuck with my soon-to-be-coming PAL DVD?? I can still watch mine, but only on a computer monitor, not a US TV (without a universal DVD player),
Anarem said on February 25, 2003 01:28:
I just got the Roxette DVD, but I can’t play it on my DVD player with my NTSC tv set! I once read in another discussion that you *can* play the Roxette DVD on a newer model DVD player that can play both PAL and NTSC, but I don’t remember which model! Please help.
powerpoplarry said on February 25, 2003 01:48:
Ana, I think you need a universal DVD player. I don’t have one, just a DVD-ROM drive on my computer, I live in NY. However, when I DO get one for a TV, it will be a universal one. Those are more expensive, but that’s what you need, as it translates the PAL signal into NTSC terms. Don’t you wish we didn’t have this problem, PAL vs NTSC?? Such a pain, grrrr!!
robmc said on February 25, 2003 02:40:
Hi Anarem.
Most Apex brand DVD players convert Pal to NTSC.I got an Apex 1200 at a Future Shop here in Ottawa for less than $90 (Canadian) last December and the “All The Videos Ever Made” DVD plays fine.
BTW, Powerpoplarry, Americans can also purchase Apex DVD players from their local Best Buy or Circuit City.

Eee! I just got the “Roxette Live-ism” DVD off of ebay! I’m so excited! It includes: Hotblooded, Dangerous, The Big L, Watercolours in the Rain, Church of Your Heart, Knockin’ on Every Door, Things Will Never be the Same, Dressed for Success, Soul Deep, The Look, It Must Have Been Love, (Do You Get) Excited?, Joyride, Perfect Day, and How Do You Do!
I’ve also put in a bid for a rare Roxette photo and press release kit that looks awesome...
robmc said on February 25, 2003 22:21:
BTW, the “All The Videos” DVD is available from Australia at AU$30 ($28 Canadian/$19 American). S&H is around AU$6 ($5.50 Canadian/$4 American).
Canadians should be able to get it without duties, customs fees and taxes, if it’s the only item in the shipment. The DVD’s declared value should be below $20 Canadian so it should get through o.k.
Ferdan said on February 26, 2003 01:17:
I don’t know why you’d want a NTSC DVD, NTSC quality sux... it’s an old system created for Black and white TV and then updated for colour TV.
Pal was born colour TV from scratch. So i´d get a multisystem TV too to enjoy the DVD with PAL colours :)
Anyway, at least here in Argentina... every newer TV is PAL N, PAL M and NTSC and some also PAL B.
ditroia said on February 26, 2003 02:00:
For you NTSC folks
1. Any DVD player should be able to at least pass on the PAL stream to your Display Device if it can’t [or you have selected] not to convert it to NTSC.
2. Most DVD Players Should be able to convert The PAL to NTSC, [But the Quality will suffer]. Only do this If your Display Device cannot View or Convert PAL Video.
3. If both your DVD Player and Display Device can Convert PAL into NTSC then let the Display Device do it. The Quality is usually better that way, but you should experiment.
4. If your Display Device can Play PAL nativly [that is without any conversion]. Then you have no problem, just turn off any conversion on your player or Display.
5. Any TV Bought it the last 8 years should be able to play PAL Nativly, unless it’s a cheapie.
6. Any SDTV or HDTV set should have no problems playing PAL Nativley
Email me for more info.

Nope the DVD cannot be found in Chile. They are no big here anymore. Last successful song was Wish I Could Fly... Lately I’ve heard “Breathe” on the radio a couple of times anyway.
Anyway here in chile we have NTSC also.
Oh! I was in Cordova, Argentina a month ago.... I couldn’t find the DVD........ I want it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi Ditroa. Just thought i’d post some comments on the North American equipement.
Most of the DVD players i’ve encountered here in Canada don’t recognise Pal DVDs, at all. I’ve only encountered a few that actually played these DVDs and those rarely converted Pal to NTSC.
New televisions in North America priced below CAD$900 will not likely be Pal compatible, especially if they aren’t equiped with RCA/Composite imputs. There isn’t much of a demand for PAL televisions here so this function is usually added to newer televisions priced higher than CAD$1000.
DVD player and television manuals contain information on their compatibilities and functions so people should consult these manuals first ; Dealers should have the manuals for their display models and some manuals can be found online via the manufacturer’s site.
Most of my DVDs are NTSC so I just purchased an Apex 1200 (newer model) for a few Pal DVDs and connected it to my smaller JVC television (NTSC CAD$800). The picture quality’s very good so there’s no need to buy expensive equipment to view Region 0 Pal DVDs.

gsorbazo: Actually it’s CordoBa...
Maybe you haven’t visited the import stores...
Did you go to “Perro Records”? This stores sells import titles.. Another store who sells rarities is “Lado B”
ditroia said on February 27, 2003 02:24:
Cheers Rob. In Australia Even the most budget TV/DVD is NTSC compatible, so I find it hard to Understand why it’s not like that in North America.
Also I’ve heard that the version of NTSC that is used in South America is Compatible with PAL.
Finally Guys If The DVD had been converted to NTSC the quality would be worse that the PAL due to the inherent Qualities of NTSC.
Cheers
Dave

Hey, I just went to a BestBuy near me, and they had no Apex DVD players there, BUT they had another small brand DVD model, I forgot what, Comp-something. But that’s the ONLY model that is both NTSC + PAL compatible, and it costs only $70 US!! Not sure if it’s a universal DVD player, able to play any region, but it DOES play PAL DVD’s, says so on the box. I was told that if I buy that model, I should get a better cable, as because of the small brand, the cable is probably crap.
Not sure if I should trust this brand, as I’ve never heard of it, but it IS low-priced, and it is at Best Buy, a store I do trust, so maybe I should do it. At least now, they are making North American DVD models that play PAL DVDs, instead of having to worry about the pain in the ass conversion, with foreign VHS tapes!!
robmc said on February 28, 2003 01:13:
Hi ditroia.
Pal DVDs are rarely imported into North America by the major retailers so there just isn’t a demand for the nessesary equipment.
Most of the major studios and labels are American or affiliated to an American studio or label so major releases are usually released on NTSC anyway, usually prior to a Pal release. And popular foreign releases are distributed by American distributors and their affiliates in NTSC here, a standard that would likely be replaced by something other than Pal - A more modern standard.
robmc said on February 28, 2003 01:33:
Hi powerpoplarry.
I could have sworn seeing a bunch of Apex players on Best Buy’s online catalog. Now they’re gone. Weird. Best Buy owns Future Shop here in canada and they’re still here. The Apex players are still listed at Circuit City and Amazon.
I also encountered another low cost player here in Ottawa that converts Pal to NTSC but I forgot’s it’s name. I wasn’t familiar with the brand either so I went with Apex.
I don’t think I’ve encountered that Comp... brand. You could always ask the people on rec.video.dvd.players for additional information on it.

Hi. I thought i’d post an update to this thread. I managed to find a few North American dvd players that are PAL compatible and/or convert PAL into NTSC.
If your DVD player was manufactured by Apex Digital, Denon, JVC, Jaton, Malata, Norcent, Panasonic, Philips, Pioneer or by Toshiba, please consult your manual. Your player may already be PAL compatible (requiring PAL compatible television) and/or may convert PAL into NTSC.
I’ve also compiled a list of North American DVD Players that are PAL compatible and/or convert PAL into NTSC, by brand name and model, on my site at :
http://www.musicbymailcanada.com/DVDPAL.html
Please contact me if you ever encounter other models that I haven’t listed. Thanks.

Try:
http://www.dvdoverseas.com/
for all of your doubts and electronic devices involved.
By the way, American fans:
I live in Mexico, bought the DVD from England, had to buy a code free DVD + multisystem TV to watch it. (They exist so look them up)
I spent almost $800 USD just to watch Roxette.
Am I a fan or what?
robmc said on March 17, 2003 16:48:
I imported a copy of the “All The Videos” DVD from Australia for around CAD$30 and purchased an Apex DVD player (that converts PAL into NTSC) for CAD$104 (CAD$90 + tax).
Connected the player to a NTSC television I already had so it only cost me CAD$134.
Note that many dealers assume that all DVDs released in their country are in that country’s regional coding. The Region 0 Pal version’s catalog number is 7243 4 92642 9 8 or 4 92642 9.

We can not find any original CD ... even Roxette CD here in my country :(( it’s a sad story .. Isn’t it?
All of my CDs are copy... Ya know we have NO COPY RIGHT here ... So do not waist money on originals ... they just copy it easily and give it to people!!!!!!

I didn’t get a pirated copy of the DVD. I got an original, distributed by EMI.
tevensso (moderator) said on March 17, 2003 20:56:
The problem is that it’s relatively easy to convert NTSC to PAL, while it’s not so easy the other way around. Like some also mentioned here, there is simply no demand for PAL-converting equipment in the US.
powerpoplarry said on March 18, 2003 00:47:
Well, I have my DVD from the UK (it’s region-free), and what I do is I go to stores and try it out on the different brands. Here’s what I found out, from you guys or trying out different systems (I’m in the US):
Firstly, if it plays on the player, it’ll work on any TV it’s connected to.
I know APEX plays these discs, as Compu-Home, BUT so does SHARPER IMAGE!! I tried out a SI DVD surroundsound system, and it worked perfectly!! A friend of mine has a DAEWOO, which cost $60 (this company also makes cars, it’s based outta Korea), and it worked on his player!! Plus all DVD-ROM computer drives, it’ll work on.
HOWEVER, it won’t work on Toshiba, Sony, Panasonic, JVC, basically Japanese brands sold in the US. You have to use trial and error. I trust Daewoo, and Sharper Image, and maybe Apex. I have a feeling these players that work are lower-cost as the demand is not there.
ditroia said on March 18, 2003 03:31:
I am really suprised that very little equipment over there is Multi Systym. Be aware if you convert PAL TO NTSC, you will introduce the 3:2 Pulldown effect, which looks horrible. The only way to get rid of this is to have a prpgressive scan DVD or TV which makes it look like PAL.
I am suprised Canada doesn’t have more PAL compatible devices considering in France they use Secam, [which is a few more lines better than PAL].
I Don;t see what the problem of Playing a DVD or your PC is, all my DVD’s are watched on my PC. PC Montiros are much better display devices, they are progressive scan nativly. Remebr there is no PAL or NTSC for Monitors.
Cheers Dave
powerpoplarry said on March 18, 2003 07:33:
Me neither!! My computer drive is what I use, no problem, and it’s perfect, yet I wish my monitor was bigger!! It’s 17 inch which is OK.

Hi. Sorry for the late reply. Computer problems :
