What have you done for Valentines Day???

I am in such a good mood today, I just have to share with you Guys what I have done for my wife today. Well it all startet more than a week ago really. A week ago I started to cut out paper hearts, in different heart shapes and different shades of red. I cut out one heart for every day we know each other. Which are more than 1000 hearts!
This morning I got up at 2.45 and tip toed out of bed into our living room and put up all the hearts over the walls with something like bluetag in our living room. When I was finished putting all the hearts up a couple of hours later, I put a beautiful red rose in the middle of the room with a beautifull heart shaped baloon with Angel Faces on it next to the rose. (My wife loves Angels).
I had 100 special red hearts, with 100 cream colored hearts on it, slightly smaller in a slightly different shape, glued onto the 100 special red ones. On the cream colored hearts I printed German sayings, the “Liebe ist...” sayings. (Love is...) Them sayings are famous in Germany...
So I took them 100 special hearts with the cream colored heart shaped sayings on it and layed them in a heart shape around the rose and the baloon in the middle of the living room. From that heart shape I layed a line with the rest of the hearts, going from that heart in the middle of the living room, through our kitchen and hallway into our bedroom. This morning when she woke up, she saw the hearts, just had to follow them into the living room to find her little surprise. My fingers are numb from all that bluetag pulling and cutting out so many hearts, but I must say, having seen her face this morning, all of this was worth it. This all took me three hours, so at 5.45 this morning, I was able to go back to bed for another hour....
I am in such a good mood right now, I love Valentines Day, because this gives me another excuse to do something or her. I always do something special for her on “normal” days anyway, but of course Valentines Day had not to be missed out.
So, tell me, what have you done?? I am really interested. Maybe I will use some of your Guys Ideas and put them into practise for next years Valentines day... ;-)

I think it is kinda strange to hear people say, they don’t believe in Valentines Day. What is it you don’t believe in? Love? I think it is stupid just do do something romantic for Valentines, you should do it all around the year. What I love about Valentines Day is, it gives you another excuse to do something nice. And the most important thing for me is, that my wife feels appreciated, especially on a day like this. I mean, what would she feel like, if I do really special things all around the year but totally leave out Valentines Day?? Besides that, I strongly believe, any Girl that says, she doesn’t believe in Valentines Day, just says it, because her Valentine doesn’t really do anything for her. She would feel ashamed to tell her friends her Boyfriend didn’t bother, so she just says, I don’t belive in it.

I’m not totally against Valentines day, but,if you only can say “I love you” or give presents on that day,it’s better that you don’t......
It’s getting a commercial day,you give presents because “it’s like that,it’s Valentine.....”

I worked. I despise most holidays... the only one I tolerate is New Year’s because that’s the one of the few times I drink. There is no one in my life, never will be, so I don’t celebrate Valentine’s. I’m going through something of a spritiual crisis, so that shoots Easter, Christmas, and a couple of others in the foot. Thanksgiving drives me insane because there is “soo much I should be thankful for” but I’m finding it difficult to give a shit. I hate Utah, so “Pioneer Day” sux sheep. It’s becoming harder and harder to be proud to be an American, ESPECIALLY on this board, so our Independence Day just got flushed. Labour Day is a joke, and I get depressed on Memorial Day, remembering those who once loved me are now gone.
ANY QUESTIONS?!?!

Does anyone know from where this tradition comes from? I’m really curious. Who was that San Valentine and when it started the 14th /02 being “lover’s day”?

I don’t mind Valentines day. Though, it is a sad reminder of my lost dog called ’Valentine’.
I had a Maltese (cross breed) male dog. He was small, white and beautiful. I called him Valentine because I got him on Valentines day in 1999 when he was just a little puppy. I remembered it so well as I was also beginning to study at a university that year.
When I started university weeks after, I just couldn’t stand the fact that I’m at uni while he is all alone at home. So, after all my classes for the day I rushed home. Everytime I get home I could hear his little footsteps running to greet me. He was so adorable, he has these gentle eyes.
Still, it breaks my heart everytime I had to leave my little Val at home alone that I begged my dad to buy another dog just to keep him company.
So, my dad gave in and we went bought a female Maltese (pure breed) that day in March and I named her Princess.
Just like Val, I fell in love with another dog Princess. I don’t mind going to uni everyday since then, I could even stay late if I have too because I know they have each other.
However, a year later, my dad and I moved to our new house. But our house is still not totally finished, there were no fences back then and we were just afraid that our dog might get out and get lost. So, we left both our dogs in the care of my aunt just for a while ’till we get the fences built.
Anyway, so many things happened. To make the story short both my dogs got lost while still with my aunt (I’m not blaming her, it was my cousin’s fault, my aunt’s daughter). That time the song “Who let the dogs out” was a hit, which reminded me of my cousin.
I spent my whole Christmas week looking for them, circling around the place they got lost, knocking on every houses, putting up posters, etc. For some reason, my friends and I were having bad luck with our pets. I lost both of my dogs, my other friend lost both her dogs as well (both female dogs) while my other friend’s cat died.
A week later, I got a call from a vet (which is an hour drive from where the dogs got lost), they told me they found Princess, they traced her back to me because both my dogs was microchipped. My dad and I went to get her and she was so skinny. We didn’t even know how she got there, it was so far from where she’s been. We asked the lady if there was another dog with her but she said there was none.
We still have Princess, I still haven’t found Valentine, I now have another male dog called Rhubarb. I never found out what happened to Val.
My mother’s theory is Princess and Valentine were probably together (Princess always follows wherever Valentine goes) but someone probably found them and decided to keep Valentine because he is a male dog (he will not give birth to more puppies). But both my dogs are desexed (we had to otherwise they’ll reproduce) but my mum told me the person probably didn’t know that.
It’s been 2 years since that happened and everytime Valentines day approaches I always remember my special little dog. I hope he is safe wherever he is. I really hope .............

@Santi:
To answer your question about the origins of Valentine’s Day.
There are actually two stories of Valentine. One is about a Roman God called “Lupercus” while the
other is about a priest named “Valentine”.
Roman God “Lupercus”
——————————–
Back in the early days of Rome, there were vicious wolves that roamed the woods. People were scared of this so they called one of their gods “Lupercus” to keep the wolves away.
In honor of this god, the Romans would hold a festival for him which was celebrated on February 15.
One of the custom among the young people is on the eve of the festival, the name of the Roman girls were written on a tiny piece of paper and placed into jars. The Roman boys would then draw these tiny piece of papers and whose name was chosen is going to be his sweetheart for the year.
Saint Valentine
——————————–
Valentine was a priest in Rome. Back then Christianity was still a new religion. Claudius II who was the emperor at the time ordered the Roman soldiers NOT to become engaged or marry. The emperor believes that married men would want to stay at home to be with their families rather than fight his wars.
Valentine did not agree with the emperor and so he married young couples in secret. When the emperor found out about this, Valentine was imprisoned and on February 14th he was beheaded.
After his death and as Rome is becoming more Christian, Valentine was considered and named a saint. The priests then moved the holiday from Feb 15 to Feb 14. Now, the holiday honors Saint Valentine instead of Lupercus, which is why it’s called Valentine’s Day.

Not a good valentines day for me:(

Where did I get it from? I learnt it at school on Valentines day. Didn’t your teachers tell you about that story?
I’ve also read it on encyclopedias.
I also took the liberty to look for it on the net so I could give you a link. The following are the links.

Santi said on February 21, 2003 20:16:
No, I never learnt that. But then again that tradition I would say is much more commercial and introduced by american series than actually Spanish. Or maybe not... I dunno. I don’t remember when I was younger anything related to this.
When I have the first memory about it I remember it bugged me quite a lot :D I was very very shy to say anyone that I liked her (even if I did). I think I’ve never liked it, never really had “a Valentine” that day... and some year it became quite “tragic”... but anyway, I think I don’t need to be psychoanalysed here :)
Twilight-Ghost said on February 22, 2003 15:20:
If you think about it. Most traditions are very commercialised. Valentines Day, Christmas Day, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day.
You’re not alone, Santi. There are also people who are annoyed with the Valentines Day tradition. For me, I sometimes feel sad if I don’t have a valentine.
In fact, there are three yearly tradition that sometimes (not all the time) I find depressing, which are “Valentines Day”, “My birthday” and “Christmas Day”.
Valentines day reminds me of relationship I wish I have but don’t have (that was then - I’m fine now), Birthdays reminds of goals I’m suppose to have achieved but didn’t. I think it’s got to do with another year and I feel I’m suppose to be doing something new (but my life is starting to change now so I’m quite happy). Christmas reminds me of both relationship and goals. I think its because its the end of the year and I tend to look back what I’ve achieved and Christmas is something you spend time with your family with.
But I soon realised that I should be happy because I have friends and family that are very dear to me.
I’m fine now and I don’t always think like this, I don’t want you all thinking what a depress and lonely person I am ’cause I’m not. Those were just the days when I didn’t know any better. I’m happy =)
