Scarf on the guitar

I’ve always wondered why Per Gessle in the first videos, used to hang a long scarf between the strap and the guitar.
Does anyone know if he ever explained why, if there’s a meaning, it was a present from his mother or girlfriend or something :D?
I’d really like to put a scarf too, but no one ever has given me one, and also it has to be cool enough :P

I can name a few guitars from the videos:

LTYH - Fender Telecaster
Dangerous - Fender Telecaster, and a custom-made Rickenbacker (I read about this on Rickenbacker.com)
Joyride, FLAF, COYH - Rickenbacker 360
TBL, SMT, F’93, Fireworks - Gretsch White Falcon II

Best I can come up with at the moment. Hehe. :)
