Do you like girlbands?

Since there’s a topic here about boybands. I also want to know if any of you like girlbands, such as Destiny’s Child, Spice Girls, Atomic Kitten, etc.

I hate them! But I love Girls!!!!

I like Destiny’s child :)
and TATU

of course!!!

I feel a bit too old for that but I like(d) the very famous 80´s UK female group Bananarama.
Wish I could say they´re “still going strong” but only the true fans are left I´m afraid.

No... I hate them as much as I hate boybands

Don’t knock it:

Geri Halliwell from the Spice Girls. Schizophrenia’s a good album IMHO.

Girl bands in general? Nope

if they sing naked yes

i like original girl groups like the supremes the ronettes the go gos

I like Bananarama + Tatu

I agree with coyboyusa, the original ones are great...
And I think Sugababes are pretty ok aswell...

I saw Bananarama live on France‘s TV5 two years ago, they looked adorable. Still so young.

I also like Sugarbabes and TATU.

I love that TATU song that goes ...................

“All the things she said (all the things she said)
Running through my head, running through my head “

I love Elastica and The Tuesdays, and of course one of the “best bands ever” (for me anyway :D): THE BANGLES!!!!!!!
Though I don’t understand why you call them “girlbands”... is there any reason why musicians have to be men? :o

@Santi:

If you would read my first post then you’d understand why I called it ’girlbands’.

There was another thread here about ’boybands’ so I thought I’d also start a discussion about ’girlbands’.

The thought that musicians has to be men never occured to me at all.

Oh sorry :D

Then I don’t know, I don’t listen to that kind of music so much.

I just love the Song: “Sound of the Underground” from “Girls Aloud”. That song kicks ass, simply amazing! I think, it is one of the best songs ever published by a girl group.
But I wouldn’t say I like the band, and I don’t disslike them, couldn’t care less about them really, but love their Song!

Tatu is ok and I like the corrs (mainly women in there)

I prefer female artists in general, but not ’girl bands’. I like the way female artists seem to experiment more - male artists ususally tend to stick to the same thing their entire career. People like Bjork, Sheryl Crow and Alanis always tend to keep me guessing what they’re gonna do next.

Now this is an interesting one. Enjoy.

” Every so often a phrase associated with music comes along and drives me insane. Bunghole. The phrase that currently resides on my last nerve is boy band. I don’t have a problem with the actual words, I have a problem with the fact that they are frequently applied incorrectly.

The term boy band is often used when the topic is the Backstreet Boys or N’Sync or 98 Degrees. They are not bands. They are singing groups. The word band implies that instruments are being played and these guys aren’t playing instruments! They are singers. Their job is to sing. They have backup bands to provide the music.

I looked up the definition of band and the third listing pertained to music. It is a group of musicians. It doesn’t say singers, it says musicians. The definition even lists the main instruments used in a band. Of course there are many singers who also fall under the category of musician, but I’m not generous enough to put the Backstreet Boys, N’Sync, or 98 Degrees in that group.

The Jackson Five and Hanson, now those are boy bands. At least they started as boy bands, now I would just file them under “bands.” They get to be called bands because they play(ed) instruments! Hanson never just walked around in their videos wearing sweaters and looking ugly like 98 Degrees, they had music to perform. Nor did Hanson ever do unfortunate dance routines and look ugly, they were busy playing instruments.

The Hanson boys also write their own stuff, which isn’t technically a band requirement but I sure do like it when bands write their own songs. And in their case they wrote their very own number one single while still in their teens, take that Backstreet Boys, N’Sync, and 98 Degrees!

Point being, I wish people would properly label the so-called boy bands as singing groups, because that is what they are. And I don’t necessarily think that being in a singing group is less prestigious than being in a band. Look at all of the artists who qualify as singing groups. Off the top of my head I can think of The Four Seasons, Dion and the Belmonts, The Temptations, and The Supremes. Great acts, all of them. And all of them are also singing groups.

I do not mean to imply that the “boy bands” of today are in the same league as any of those groups. They are not. The modern groups of which I speak suck complete and total monkey. But no matter what I think of their music, it doesn’t change the fact that they should not be labeled as bands. They are singing groups.”

only real girl groups like the ronettes, the supremes..they r real girl groups

I agree with Coyboyusa - the go go’s are a real girl band. They were the first all-female group to write, play and perform their own music.

If you like good, fast-paced music, take in a Go Go’s concert.

Belinda Carslile? Yuck...

{does cheesy frilly dancing}
“Ooh.. heaven is a place on earth”

Double yuck...!

Isn’t Drain a girl band.

“I looked up the definition of band and the third listing pertained to music. It is a group of musicians. It doesn’t say singers, it says musicians.” (~Damineh)

What is a musician?
Singers (performer), instumentalist (performer) and composers (writer) are all musicians. They create/perform music.

First of all, the words “boy band” and “girl band” is new, being used just recently by the media and execs.
If the word “band” back in the olden days refers only to musicians that does the whole three (1-write their songs, 2-play instruments, 3-sing their songs) that is because back then, what is commonly known as “bands” are more common than “singing groups” (no instrumentalists).

However, the truth is this. The “general” definition of the word “band” (in musical terms) is “an organization of musicians who perform together”. The key words are “musicians” and “performs”.
Performing musicians are singers (voice) and instrumentalists (instrument). So, any group that does both, or just one or the other are considered “bands”.

Many words has changed through time, including “diva” and “gay”. So, why not “bands”? Especially since the word “band” generally means a group of performing musicians so the term is becoming more “correct”, nowadays.

Military band, brass band, orchestra, singing groups in “general” terms are “bands”.

I think in the modern times, we are now referring to “bands” in “general” terms, not in “restricted” (the three - sing/play/write) term as in the olden days.

So, yes. Back Street Boys, Tatu, Destiny’s Child, etc. may not be playing an instrument, but they are considered musicians. Why? because they are singers.
A group of singers (i.e a group of performing musicians). Therefore can be called a “band” ... generally.
