Well, the worst has come to pass. I’ve been trying, since telling you all
about potentially having to move the server, to figure out a way to keep it
where it is (and therefore keep it free), but it just can’t be done. I’ve
been given a deadline of 31 October by which to move the server (but
realistically, it has to be done before that so that the various
difficulties involved in actually moving something as large as roxette.org
can be handled properly).
I’ve investigated various hosting options, and it seems like it’s going to
end up costing me slightly more than $100 per month to keep roxette.org
online with the same level of services we have had. Unfortunately, there
aren’t really any good ways to do it for less than that even if I cut the
level of services, because hosting a dedicated server or colocating a
server seem to both start right around that price range.
Assuming I get the money to do this from the people who use roxette.org’s
web hosting services, it won’t affect the RML (or any other list hosted on
lists.roxette.org) at all. It also won’t affect roxette.org email, which is
not served from my machines here, and is not in any trouble whatsoever.
If you’ve ever considered donating money to help keep roxette.org running,
the time is fast approaching. I’ll be posting details in the next few days
about how to do it (probably through PayPal or a similar online payment
service). I’m not going to insist that anybody on the RML, or any of the
other lists hosted on roxette.org, pay anything - after all, mailing lists
should be kept free - but I sure would appreciate it.
More news as it develops... Keep your fingers crossed that I’ll actually be
able to pull this off... :)

Taking into account that hosting companies charge 5$/month MINIMUM, since normal is 10$/month for hosting your domain, I think 10$ a YEAR is a very fair deal!
It would be nice if all of us who have a website in roxette.org would add these links on the websites, even if Dan is not asking for it right now.
I think Steven already made some move with this, but I cant find it on his site!...

There are now two ways to donate money to roxette.org:
Amazon -
PayPal -
As I mentioned in my email a couple of days ago, roxette.org is in
desperate need of donations. It’s going to cost right around $100 a month
just to pay for server space and bandwidth to keep roxette.org’s web
hosting operation running. If I were to drop the web hosting entirely, and
stick with just the mailing lists and roxette.org mail, we could stay
running for a little while longer where we are - but even then, it would
only be a matter of (very little) time before the server needs to be moved,
and the costs would be about the same. So, it pretty much has to be done
now.
I’ve arranged for two different mechanisms by which you can easily donate
money to roxette.org, no matter where you’re located. The first is through
the Amazon Honor System, at
- you can donate whatever you like, anonymously if you wish, using any
major credit card (even outside the United States). The other is through
PayPal, at
, and allows you to donate using
either a credit card or a checking account.
The reason for the two different mechanisms is that PayPal charges an
“account fee” for international users, and I didn’t want that to be the
only way for people to be able to contribute. Both Amazon and PayPal charge
me a service fee as a percentage of anything you donate, but it’s a lot
more reasonable than setting up my own mechanism to take credit cards. I’d
prefer PayPal donations from those of you in the U.S., as the payment fees
charged by PayPal are less than those charged by Amazon; however, I
understand that many people may be more comfortable with Amazon. The bottom
line is, anything will be welcome and greatly appreciated.
If you host a website on roxette.org, you should very seriously consider
making a donation. If even half of the people who host sites on roxette.org
donated $10.00 per year (or $1.50 per month - unfortunately, the
transaction fees really take a lot out of small payments), we would easily
have enough money to keep roxette.org running for the forseeable future. I
would prefer not to make donations mandatory for website hosting, but I may
be forced to do so if there is not enough response (and soon).

- until it’s moved, I don’t intend to violate the rule in place on my
network about commercial activity.
