Experiments!

After a very long time, I was just putting CBB in my CD-Player and while listening to ‘Love is all’ I wondered…
With songs like ‘Love is all’, ‘See me’ and ‘Entering your heart’ Per and Marie are obviously in unknown territories. Wouldn’t it be wise to explore these territories some more. Why not releasing a complete album based on the Enya-style in ‘See me’ or synt-pop like in ‘Entering your heart’?
If Roxette wants to be commercially successful again, isn’t it time to experiment more?
And for those of you who say they don’t care about commercial success…well, there are some people who would like to see them on stage and don’t live in on of the very few countries, where Roxette is still popular enough to tour without declaring bankruptcy.
What do you think?
Markuz said on June 8, 2002 03:34:
hhmmm, interesting...
BUT
I don’t think that enya-style would guarantee the album’s success. Of course, it’s going to be interesting for us fans, but the rest of the wold won’t give a damn about it.
There is more than a “music trend” to take into account. They need GOOD LYRICS in the first place, and a more mature sound and content (read: quit doing those idiotic dance songs). BUT the main reason of their ultimate downfall is the fact that Roxette lost their uniqueness, their “magic” sound.
In the 80’s, when everything was long-haired bands with a bad-boy attitude like Poison, Bon Jovi, Anthrax and rap artist like Run DMC, Roxette had this perfect mixture of pop songs with strong guitars and good melodies, all wrapped in a “good guys” and “positive band” package.
In the early 90’s the whole music market went pop oriented and then around 1994 everything went grunge. But all their releases had that “roxette quality” that made them so unique. Especially in C!B!B!, their most poetic and soulful album in my opinion.
But now that the airwaves are flooded with dance music, plastic pop and manufactured boy and girl bands, Roxette sounds exactly like those artist. They don’t have anything creative or innovative to offer: THEY ARE NOT UNIQUE ANYMORE. And the funny bit is that they always said they hated dance music. After that, they recorded songs like Stars and MMHGP. How ironic...
Their terrible management, their not-so-clever decisions, their stupid self-admiration attitude and EMI are another chapter of this story.
Cheers.
Mkz.

@Markuz: Yes! You are right. But I think the most important reason is
THEY DON’T ACT CAREFULLY IN MAKING SONGS.THEY DON’T SPEND TIME ON THEIR SONGS.
And this causes being non-creative.
It’s obvious that they don’t try to create better songs. They are satisfied of these weak songs.
(WEAK in compare with C!B!B! or Joyride)

I don’t really like Love is all, so I don’t know... I think they still need asskicking songs which could move wider audience.

This is where we come to a stumbling point.....
“If Roxette want to be comercialy successful again”
IF! ;)
who says they do?? ;)

Markuz you sound like a rox critic at ubl.com
thanx Vix, exactly the comment I was waiting for..not!
I don’t know if they care about their commercial success...but even if they aren’t...somehow Roxette has lost something, maybe what Markuz called there uniqueness. I think, it’s about time, to create again a Roxette trademark, maybe the directions I pointed out aren’t the right ones, but they should do something! Bringing out an Enya-style album is not guarantee for a success, but at least it’s a try. The worst that can happen is that less albums are sold (who actually cares at this point), but still, they had the courage to experiment and that would at least prove all these critics wrong, complaining about the very narrow horizon of Roxette music.

@ Markuz
Now you’re talking! Wise words.
But: With Crash!Boom!Bang! they went absolutely the wrong way at that time. The album was way too rocky for the poppers and too poppy for the rockers. I’d say it was too lame for the market back then so I don’t wonder it didn’t sell even the half of what the great Joyride managed to sell.

@ Pearls of Roxette
I have to disagree with you...Roxette should NOT go back - they should go forward...Be brave to try new things...Experiments! :-)

I can agree that they need to explore som new ground. With CBB they went a bit off the road and thats good in a way, but don’t far enough. I think the problem is that they have at least two kind of fans. With RS (espesially TCOTH) they get some new fans and I think Per see the situation as “Hey, it’s a new generation that starts to explore us right now”. Don’t get me wrong - I just love TCOTH - but it feels that RS didn’t include that special roxette-quality you guys talk about.
But indeed, more synths like the song mentioned above. And if the new album is that heavy as the say - that’s a unexplored ground for them.
C’ ya!
