where did it all go wrong?

I listened to RS again a few days ago, and I just realised that every songs bar Marie’s is just the typical pop style writting by Per, they’ve just improvised with the music. If you actually noticed there are no big unique songs like ’Queen Of Rain’ or even more recently ’Beautiful Things’ or ’Anyone’. What’s up with this? Has Per lost his magical gift of writting the best ballads of all time? If I’ve missed a songs with a few lines that you think are wonderful post them here coz I sure haven’t got a hope in hell of finding them on that pure pop piece of rubbish!
Even songs which could have the best lyrics ever are clogged up with these emotion-less words like:
Milk & toast & honey make it sunny on a rainy Saturday
Milk & toast, some coffee take the stuffy-ness out of days you hate.
ITYNTTGH
Why don’t you take the rest of the day off, you do deserve a break
Follow that road it ain’t long just cross that silver lake.
MWMLML
I’m talking bout my world, my love, my life everytime I try to close my eyes
You just enter my mind and you lay yourslef ydown beside me?
Even the best examples here have these emotion-less words which fail to capture the wonderful immagry that songs such as ’Wish I Could Fly’, ’Anyone’, ’Cooper’ & ’Beautiful Things’ did, and all them examples came from the HAND album

HAND sucks.... and RS... well.... it’s not their best....
well, anyway.... i think per got bored of fans.... i mean..... any artis would get bored and out of willings to keep with a project if you see in a poll to the fans in roxette.org where it’s asking to the fans what would they want to be released
and a compilatory DVD is in the first place..... and a brand new album is almost in the last place.... so, if you see that as an artist.... certainly kills your strenght to keep on making new things....
“A possible Roxette DVD must feature...
Unreleased videos, interviews and the making of the albums (590 votes) 52.82%
A full concert and making of (299 votes) 26.77%
No DVD, they must release new albums (173 votes) 15.49%
No DVD, they must release a game (55 votes) 4.92%”

I don’t think per got bored of the fans, but also the fans are getting bored of roxette, per, marie, emi, compilations etc etc etc........
Don’t you think???

I don’t see the point and i actually like the quotes mentioned above. If real fans can get bored with roxette?.. I don’t think so, i mean don’t we crave for more all the time? Sure it is a bit annoying with compilations, but it is not boredom.
and hey, Marie’s box will have 14 extra tracks!!! Even the most hard core fan hasn’t heard some of these songs, for me it is for sure 3 ones I have never heard of. So, in the end i am happy :)
japeke said on May 30, 2002 14:32:
She can also just release a sort of double cd:
cd1: the 14 tracks (with the 3 you’ve never heard of)
cd2: the live cd
If you release something like this, the price is almost the half or less from the price of the box-set, and the fans are even happier, and i think something like that will sell also much better to the ’normal’ swedish people, not only the hardcore fans.........
Just my opinion,
JAAP

I totally have to agree with Gyllene Tjej here, I dont understands threads like this, why be a Rox fan if the only thing you can do is moan and complain about them ????????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And about the Marie box set; Japeke I think youre wrong, this is going to sell to the people who dont have the albums yet, the people who bought Maries GT last year and feel for more now.
And yeah of course some hardcore fans will also buy it but we are for sure not the biggest group the EMI is releasing this for.
I guess thats also a very important point here; you can keep complaining about all the compilations etc, but these are not only made for us, they are actually made for people who arent fans but might be interested in that!!!

I think that fans can get bored with some songs, and a little bit disapointed with Roxette. Latelly looks like they are not pushing themselves hard enough to touch the people with their songs. Really, RS is not their best album, looks like there’s missing something there.
gesslefan_no1 said on May 30, 2002 16:47:
that was a really good point Sarah !!!
The hardcore fans that buys absolutely everything that is released are not that many ...
japeke said on May 30, 2002 22:53:
@ Ferdan: :-) Cool!!!!!
@ Sarah-P and the rest: I understand your point, but I am a fan, and i spend almost all my money on Roxette, but I don’t get anythng New/refreshing for it, do you understand???? Of course I’ll like the ’new’ marie tracx, and like it to have something which will maybe turn ouot as a collectors item, but it isn’t anything new....... And I think that we THE FANS deserve something totally new......

I guess Per and Marie lied to themselves when they called “Room Service” the best album they’ve ever done. “Have A Nice Day” is still my favourite album, because it sounds pretty fresh, there are much more ideas in this album. Great uptempo songs like “Crush On You” (one of the best fast tracks ever) or “Stars” (I like this song, because it’s a new style, at least they dared to try out something new) and wonderful ballads on the other hand: “Wish I Could Fly”, “Salvation” or “Beautiful Things”.
Right after listening to RS for the first time I was a bit disappointed. The songs aren’t bad, but not very good either. When I this album I’m always waiting for a climax, but nothing happens. The songs just pass by. You hear it, you don’t hate it, but these songs won’t stay in your mind for long.
But there some exceptions: “The Centre Of The Heart” is another fantastic song and I also love “Milk And Toast And Honey” which could be the best Roxette-ballad ever if the lyrics weren’t that simple. Then “Entering Your Heart” - an amazing song, a step into the right decision. But instead of putting this on the album it’s wasted as B-side-track and the few people which have bought the album had to wind up with “Try” or “It Takes You No Time To Get Here”, these songs are just fillers in my opinion.
Maybe it’s the best if they release these compilations. They keep in touch with the public (at least a bit) but have enough time to write better songs for a better album.
All we can hope for is a great single, otherwise no one will care neither for the Ballads nor for the uptempo-compilation. Maybe the performances at NOTP will help to sell the album, but I’m not really sure.

Live performances sell...... that’s how bands get big... that’s how the biggest bands started... making a fan base out of concerts......

hrrrm Its nothing wrong
I mean Gyllene tider released a box 12 years a go or so. Per released På Väg box 10 years ago so why shouldn´t Marie release one? I like the idea
so nothing is wrong they are still the best arent they?

I totally agree with this comment rouven282 made - ’Right after listening to RS for the first time I was a bit disappointed. The songs aren’t bad, but not very good either. When I this album I’m always waiting for a climax, but nothing happens. The songs just pass by. You hear it, you don’t hate it, but these songs won’t stay in your mind for long. ’
If I was to type this comment it wouldn’t be half as sweet & it would contain swear words people! You have been warned!
My version: I was totally disappointed with RS. I was so turned off from RS that I wanted to throw the fucking thing out the window and shout ’what the fuck is this piece of crap?’ I was lying on my bed listening to the album with my eyes closed, I opened my eyes & checked my discman, it already read ’track 8:...’. I thought ’did I bloody skip some tracks or something coz it felt like I just turned the fucking CD on!’ The album never really got going, none of the things that Roxette started out with were there. The guitars were missing, Marie’s voice has closed up & Per hasn’t applied himself with his song-writting abbilities!
Small-talker said on June 1, 2002 18:51:
and how can anyone say ’Have A Nice Day sux while Room Service is OK’. I understand the whole differencial taste in music but Have A Nice Day has so much more to offer than Room Service in every way! The song-writting is clearer, the music is more superior, Maries vocals are 10 times more enhanced and the production is more versatile.
Anyone that says differently either needs to have their ears checked or they just have foolish taste in music.
Hope you can take this as creative criticism and not as me actually disregarding your taste in music.
japeke said on June 2, 2002 00:50:
@ smalltalker: You say all people have different tastes....
Well, then let everyone HAVE their own taste, and don’t call them idiots or whatever you’ve called them if they like RS more then HAND..........

I think everything went wrong after the release of DBUGTTC in 1995. The main reason of their ultimate downfall is the fact that Roxette lost their uniqueness, their “magic” sound.
In the 80’s, when everything was long-haired bands with a bad-boy attitude like Poison, Bon Jovi, Anthrax and rap artist like Run DMC, Roxette had this perfect mixture of pop songs with strong guitars and good melodies, all wrapped in a “good guys” and “positive band” package.
In the early 90’s the whole music market went pop oriented and then around 1994 everything went grunge. But all their releases had that “roxette quality” that made them so unique. Especially in C!B!B!, their most poetic and soulful album in my opinion.
But now that the airwaves are flooded with dance music, plastic pop and manufactured boy and girl bands, Roxette sounds exactly like those artist. They don’t have anything creative or innovative to offer: THEY ARE NOT UNIQUE ANYMORE. And the funny bit is that they always said they hated dance music. After that, they recorded songs like Stars and MMHGP. How ironic...
Their terrible management, their not-so-clever decisions and EMI are another chapter of this story.
Cheers. M.
