Unleashed songs remastered

This weekend I remastered four of the worst sounding songs (SMT, FLAF, LTYH, WSL) from the original Unleashed bootleg. The result came out rather well, I think. The songs are available for download at http://www.roxette.net if you are intersted.

What did you use for “re-mastering”?

I used WaveLab 3.0 with these VST/DirectX plugins:
ME Freefiler and ME Multiband compressor (Steinberg/Spectral design), L1-Ultramaximizer and MaxxBass (Waves), and Restoration-NR (Aboretum systems)

Nice job, but a little bit muffled :(

yeh nice job... but too much High Cuts... Hi hats cymbals are almost lost :(
Maybe your speakers were seted too high when you remastered it :))))

Anyway,,, it sounds much better than the avaible versions...
congrats.

Great job. Do you plan on doing any more?

I have some unleashed demos transferred to DAT, so the noise level stayed almost the same and other frequencies lifted up. Once cutting the noise at the beginning and the end it will sound damn cool.

AntiMario/Ferdan:

I agree with you, but it’s always a compromise trying to increase the volume and at the same time trying to get rid of the noice. You will have to loose something since some of the noice and some of the music are in the frequency area.

And the quality of the original songs are not the same. Therefore doesn’t the final result of the four songs have the same quality either.

well.....anti mario.... make them mp3 a post them :)))

ketil... yeh... i know, my lovely high frequencies allways get killed when you clean up a sound :(
:P

Ketil, remastering of Per/ROXgs and (especially) restoring vinyl records is my favorite thing, so surely I know ’bout the problem with noise, he-he :)

No blame, as soon as I get my CoolEdit Pro 2.0 (I use this with restoration plug-ins)
I will try to do some job too.

You probably already heard I re-mixed Den Ode Stranden (Live)to sound perfect!

P.S. That’s just great to hear an opinion from a ROX fan who’s not merely d/l songs but also tries to make them sound the real deservig way.

There are a lot of songs that need to be encoded from the CD again but to 192kps... i don’t know why 128 was used instead.
Anyway.... that’s why i also like your remaster mp3’s... they’re in 192kps :))

AntiMario: I got a new version of Den Öda Stranden (live) a while ago. I think I got it from mr. Evensson. It sounded much better than the earlier version I had. I thought it was new recording, but maybe it was your re-mix. Nice job anyway.

I haven’t done any remastering/restoring of vinyl records. It would be interesting to know more about this procedure. There is a lot of version of Rox songs that is only available on vinyl. Maybe we should start a project to make all these songs in high quality digital format (yes Ferdan, in 192 kbs :-) I have most of the original vinyl albun and singles in my collection.

Ferdan/AntiMario: is this a good idea?

Ok, if a find an interesting song in vinyl..... i´ll send it to you or anti-mario in WAV format...

Anyway... I think Marie is who has a lot of songs in vinyl....

Yep, I gave Thomas “Den Ode Stranden” :)

Ketil, I already have one CD which I called “Remastered”. It includes some trax I started my restoration with.

Among them are:
I Want You (Digital Lagerelds Mix) (this one I still consider the best job I’ve done, it sounds very like CD, all the pops and clicks are gone forever).
Beating Heart, Teaser Japanese (Oriental Version),
Innan Du Gar Kom Tillbaka, etc...

I like to make vinyl records sound like people who hear them cannot believe it was ripped from vinyl.
Of course there’s one limitation - the rips have to be perfect to start with. :)

The truth to tell recently I made only some Per written trax for other artists (Fredrik’s “Varje Hjartas Detektiv” and Anna’s “Varje Gang”). This means I’m not so interested now in “cleaning” ROX songs. The last I made was Bla December (7” version), Thomas liked it a lot.

If you interested how to make that job efficiently, I’m afraid I cannot help you in this matter. It just depends on your own skills. I use Cool Edit Pro with cleaning plug-ins, once being tuned in some way they bring out the great result. If you need to know my algoritm I can write you (or to all people here) later.

P.S. The next track I’m thinking to re-mix is “Nar Alla Vannerna Gatt Hem” (Marie and GT Live), I have some material to start with.

If you have any questions, you can always ask, maybe we could even collaborate smth togehter. Thomas told you’re the great dude :)

P.P.S. You still collect Per songs written for others?

Forgot to add, I already have almost all vinyl trax in excellent ripped WAVs, so it’s just a matter of some “keen job”.

Here’s the list of official records available on vinyl only (100% correct):

So, not that much to remaster ;)

I think the 7” Remix of Soul Deep is available on one of the Absolute Music compilation CDs (number 2 if I´m not mistaken). I don´t have the CD myself though, so I can´t check. And you forgot the Violett single (nice song BTW).

Yeah, agree about Soul Deep, have the MP3 here also made from óD.

Violett, hmm, yeah too but I’m not a great fan of Marie solo projects, so any help is welcome :)

AntiMario: How do you make a perfect rip-of from vinyl? I guess you need a good soundcard. And that you should connect the record player through an amplifier. Is there more to be aware of?

I still collect songs that Per has written for other artists. Many of the of these songs really needs a sound qualtiy improvment. It would be interesting to hear the result of those two songs you mention. The same goes for the IWY (dlm).

Is the plug-in you are using in CoolEdit available as DirectX or VST? If so I would like to try it in WaveLab or SoundForge.

And what kind of source do you have of NAVGH? Is this from the audience recording? I once tried to mix the version from the GT live CD together with the Marie parts from the Återtåget video. But it never work out.

Your list of songs looks quite complete I think, but what about the Flickorna på TV2 remix, and Neverending love euromix?

It would be cool to collaborat sometime. We need to find a suitable project though.

PS Thomas is a greate dude too.

SoundForge rulez :)

OK, step by step.

Of course you and I probably know perfectly who can make a perfect vinyl rip :)
That person makes that in the way as follows:

Rip from vinyl -> Connected DAT tapedeck -> Amplifier -> Burning to external CD-R

So no soundcard is involved which is damn cool.

I will upload I Want You (DLM) as soon as my vacationa are out. I’m sitting now on common modem, so it will take money and a lotta time to upload.

I’m not sure that Cool Edit uses Cleaning Plug-Ins in DirectX as well, but you can check out. I have NT4.0, so some plug-ins said goodbye to me just at the beginning. So don’t know, dude :)

He-he, you got my idea cracked! I will try to make Nar Alla Vannerna the xact way you described!
The truth to tell I made Den Ode Stranden this way.
Result OK? Let’s see what I can do with Marie singing.

Flickorna is in my list, have you looked carefully? :)
Euro Mix, eeh, yeah, as well as all DP. Didn’t take it into account. :)

Varje Hjartas... I sent to Thomas, he will be back earlier than me. You can ask him to send this song.
By the way I liked your CD versions of Per songs also. We also got Vi Hade Allt by Jim Jidhed, but it was a little bit later for your CD :)

Well, I made FLAF (Demo), but unfortunately with some incurable for me fakes..

The matter was that the source on Unleashed is made from tape with some unnoticable signal missings. After amplifying they become like slight pops, I could fix them out guys.

In Ketil version they are behind. So...
The file is 10 MB in VBR, can post it some day.
If you can later fix those nasty pops, the song will be great to hear.

AntiMario: I haven’t done my vinyl-rip the same way as you describe. I have done it by connecting the amplifier to my PC-soundcard. The clue here is the unit that convert from analog to digital signals. And a guess that a DAT-recorder does this better than a PC-soundcard.

Cool that we had the same idea about NAVGH. I tried a year ago to mix those two versions together. But a gave it up. My skills with music-software a have improved since then and I have some ideas about how to get this to work, but since you are into this now, I’ll rest my case. I’m looking forward to hear your result.

Sorry for not reading your list more carefully. I see now that Flickorna is on it. My excuse have to be that I have been in bed for a couple of days now with a heavy flu that makes my head work even slower than it usually do.

About you FLAF remix: If you could make this one available, I could try to do something about those nasty pops. Not to familiar with VBR format, but I guess there are programs for decoding this into wav.

I’m not sure what you mean about my CD versions of Per songs. Do you mean the one I did send to Thomas? I didn’t do any sound-improvement on this one. I got a version of VHA from Thomas. I think this one is quite good, but the version I have of VHD is not very good. I’ll ask Thomas for it when he is back.

I think I (maybe) will handle NAVGT (with Marie).
I’m not so skilled as I worked (and continue) only on vinyl records fixing which seems easy now.
I think I can mix up Marie making her sound in atmosphere of Atertaget version, that’s just a matter of some DSP efects.

Today I gave up FLAF because after 50th or 60th re-listening to it made me maaaad, so please do the best at finishing it. VBR can be decoded easily back to WAV even by WinAmp, there’s no problem with it. Besides now (oh yea, babies!) CEP 2.0 can do it on his own! Yes the program also can extract audio directly from CD and... any format of video!

OK about VHA, I just worried about. :)

P.S. If you’re interested how to clean vinyl records on your own I can tell here, that’s not a top secret.

Hey great dudes!
Back from my vacation!
I’m in if you want to start a little re-mastering club! Ha ha!

PS. Just to clarify - Ketil, the Den öde stranden you got was my live recording, not AntiMario’s rip. (Which, by the way, is groovey!)

Great to hear from you so soon. How was the resting? I hope great. Cause mine is like a drery dream. Every day people from office call me home and I still visit work in the evening.. Ehh.

Anyway, no matter, can support you with CER 2.0
Works 1,5 times faster, really.

Can you send Ketil Varje Hjartas & DOS for examining? :)

Velcome back Thomas. You are of course free to join our exclusive re-mastering club. :-)

Thanks for the info about Den öde stranden. Now I would really like to get AntiMario’s version.

AntiMario: I know how you feel after listing to a mix for the 50th time. You just get mad. Does it sound better now, or was the 30th time better, should I start over again and so on. The best thing in these cases is to take a long break and rest you ears.

Yea, Ketil, you were absolutely right that “När Alla Vännerna Gått Hem” was not so easy to mix up. I got the sound of both Marie and Per similar but Marie version has the small audience screaming part at the beginning of her singing which causes nasty immediate environment changing.. Duh.. I got the idea for solving the problem, but don’t know how to make it practically. Per’s part right before “ När alla vännerna är som ljus..” ends up with sustained guitar chord, which once being prolonged and mixed over the beginning of Marie song could easily fix up the problem.
I think I gotta learn a bit of multi-track editing at once.

I think multi-track editing is the only way to make this works. And if I remember correctly, there is a slight difference in the tempo of those two versions.

Maybe we could try to do this togheter. If you could make those version sound alike, I could try to merge them together. I’m quite familiar with Cubase which is an excelent program for multi-track editing.

Deal.

I’ll cut 2 fragments with Marie singing and will try them to sound alike.
The tempo seems to be OK, maybe you have the rip with different speed? (some VHS-R can make speed floating)
