Interntational popularity of Oprah
Invisible_man said on September 13, 2008 13:18:
this question is mostly for European and Asian members (not US or Canadians)
A friend of mine and I had a small argument of whether an average person in say Germany or Italy or France would know who Oprah was.....
well would they? Anyone from those countries can give some input?
7-Twenty-7 said on September 13, 2008 14:35:
Nobody knows her here in Argentina. Does it help? LOL
Mostly for Europeans.... I didn’t read the question properly.

7-Twenty-7,
thank you for your reply and input. Of course Argentina also counts. Pretty much anything outside of US (or North America) counts.
I appreciate people’s responses, the more the merrier, so hope to get more from other parts of the world :-)
In fact you can even ask your friends or relatives to find out if they know who she is

I’m from Bulgaria-Europe.
I know well who is she and even can guest that the reason for your argument is the fact that she refuse to invite the the reb vice-presidiant candidat in her show.
It was widely discuss in our newspapers.
I wold say that an avarage person in my country know who is she.
But maybe just know that she earns good money and that she is TV host.
Just asked 2 people and they immidiattly said- “The best host . Rich woman.”

I am from Russia, and I know who Oprah is, because at one time (I think it was mid 1990s or thereabouts) some of her shows were shown on our TV as well (were bought from the American channel, I guess), probably it was a collection of the most successful and famous editions with celebrities who were also known in Russia. So I think that people of my age (mid 20s) and older definitely know her.

England and never watched her! Infact i dont think even on tv ?
Invisible_man said on September 13, 2008 23:21:
roxettemalin, question to you in Sweden
you personally love her, but is she loved in Sweden by many, or even known by many?
let’s say I go on a crowded street in Stockholm and ask, would most people there know who she is? And would most have seen her show? And would most admire her, or just not care one way or the other?
....Also, those of you who say her show is broadcast in your country, is it on a major big network or is it on a smaller cable network that fewer people watch

Katya in Russia, Privet!!
from what you said it seems she is very known in Russia hmm?
If I went on a street in Moscow and asked 50 Russians “Who is Oprah?”, would they know? Would most of them know, or not?

Privet, Invisible Man :)
Well, I think in Moscow 30% - 40% would know Oprah which is a lot in my opinion. Except you’d probably have to name her last name Winfrey too, here, somehow you know Oprah Winfrey, and not just Oprah... In province, it’s likely to be different, the smaller the city, the less access it has to the Internet, international press, international TV, etc. And since it’s been over a decade since her shows were broadcast in Russia, a lot of people may not remember it anymore. Btw, when they were broadcast, it was on channel 1, if I am not mistaken, which was and continues to be the most important nationwide channel. Even if I am mistaken, then it definitely was the Russia channel, which - as is obvious from the name - is also one of the leading TV channels here.

I think it’s rather likely the average person in Sweden would know who she is, but it’s even more likely they’ve never watched her show.
Edit: And now I mean that they’d recognize her name, not managing to identify a photo.

Here in Germany some people knows her. But just from hearing or snippets from other tv-shows. I guess 90% or more of the people don´t know who she is, or how she looks like. Maybe the younger generation knows her. Most of the discuss-shows from US are unknown here. We have our own shows and national/european guests, which are for us more interesting.
It´s the same with Robbie Williams or Roxette, just vice versa ;)

Hello, I’m from Kazakhstan, I questioned my colleagues for you and here is the result. Young people mostly know her, some know that she is a TV host and how she looks like, some know her name and that’s it. Older people (like 45-50) don’t know her at all. Also would like to add that here we mostly watch Russian channels and like Katya said Oprah shows were shown on one of the most important Russian channels, I’m not sure but I think her shows were rather popular among teenagers, at leat I tried not to miss them. Just ask my mother and my friend out of curiosity and my mother doesn’t know her, but my friend does. Hope it helps you.

hello!
too ad to what other Swedes have said
I can tell you that 95% or even more of the Swedish population know who Oprah is, just for the simple reason her show is aired here. but it’s aired in the early afternoons as in the time most ppl are at work, so i don’t know how many people watch her show, but it’s been airing for the past couple 4-5years or so on different networks.
I haven’t heard anyone talking about her, good nor bad. But i guess as the Swedish people kinda idolises the American way or just America it self, I’d say they like her and what she stands for.(don’t kill me if I’m wrong that’s just my private opinion.) We even show Dr. Phil here whom she made famous and even other shows owned by her company (e.g. Rachel Ray)
hope my info helps you
I do have too say that i’m getting curious, why you wanted to know.
