Do You Wanna Go the Whole Way?
Roxwriter said on March 29, 2008 23:14:
Ok, here’s one to get the tongues wagging.
Do You Wanna Go The Whole Way? This has to be one of the worst songs ever recorded in the history of pop music. It’s a track that I feel greatly detracts from the Crash! Boom! Bang! album.
It kicks off with that bizarre opening string section that sounds like a soundtrack to a low budget 70’s murder-mystery show and it just goes downhill from there.
The song has so many elements to it, all of which bad, that it doesn’t know what it is. Ballad? Rock? Disco? Sexy? It’s pure filler and not the good kind. I just wonder how Clarence can allow this 3 minutes of loud noise amounting to nothing on the same album as “Sleeping in My Car” and “Run to You”.
Definitely in their Top 5 Most Terrible Tracks.
That music. That god-awful music. That riff with the strings. Was that supposed to be catchy? That horrible slow bit with Per on vocals? What the f**k? All of it. It’s ghastly.
Anyways. What do y’all think of this rarely talked about soundtrack to a 70’s Columbo episode?
Roxwriter said on March 29, 2008 23:56:
Now now now. Don’t get me wrong. I think we all love a bumbling Peter Falk with a wonky eye in a brown trench coat.
But is he pop-star material? :-) Sadly not!
C’mon, doesn’t anyone else get that feel? It’s not Per’s brightest moment. Every album has “album tracks”. Look Sharp has “Cry”. Joyride has “Small Talk”. Tourism has “Keep Me Waiting” etc etc.
Tracks that are not designed to be singles, but maintain the mood of the album without detracting from the pearls. But this one? Yeeesh.
“Ahhh one more thing... my wife loves ya but I gotta ask myself... ahh... why would a man kill himself with someone else’s gun?”

It’s a forgettable song but it’s not that bad. The thing I have never liked about it was that backwards snare-like drum sound or what ever it is on the chorus.
Keep Me Waiting should of been a single in its day! Awesome track!

Maybe we should vote for the worst Roxette’s song ever like we did for the best. Could the person who did that put a list so we could vote?
Roxwriter said on March 30, 2008 11:43:
Yes that’s exactly what we need, more lists and polls.
Then we can maybe start a “Roxette: Please tour my country” thread too.
We really need some sarcastic emoticons on this site.
Hey Tevensso, pause that Columbo DVD and go get some smilies.

Do You Wanna Go The Whole Way? is the weakest song on CBB. In the beginning I thought I liked it, but then I realized that this song somehow sucks. Sounds like a filler. Maybe it’s their worst up-tempo song ever... But no, no, nothing beats View From A Hill
Kerstin said on March 30, 2008 12:57:
For me, Do You Wanna Go The Whole Way is the best song on C!B!B!, together with the Crushing Guitars!!!!!
Definitely NOT in the Top 5 Most Terrible Tracks!!!
And no, I don’t like Columbo ;-)
whateveriam said on March 30, 2008 13:18:
CBB is, imho way way too much filler then is necessary. There’s a good, 9, 10 track album kicking and screaming to get out, but it gets lost in fillerswamp. I don’t like DYWGTWW, but I like Crashing Guitars, except for one small bit that is fastforwarded every time!
@Roxwriter - oh, so true, so true. The death of this forum will be due to polls lol.
FireDiamond said on March 30, 2008 13:19:
Sorry Roxwriter, but I totally dissagree with you. The song IS catchy and happens to be one great album track in my (and not mine only) oppinion. Sorry that you don’t like it, but that doesn’t mean at all that the song is bad!!!
Lennon said on March 30, 2008 15:03:
Hmm, okay, it’s not the best song ever written. But I think musically it’s okay. The lyrics are a little bit silly.
I think the whole compiling of the C!B!B!-Tracklist is a little bit boring, the sound is cold and sterile. Yes, there are great ones on the album, I think the first half sounds really cool. The accoustic-interuption (First Girl.. and Place your Love) is nice, too, but then it loses it’s red line. It’s not a problem of one particular song, it’s the combination and the length of the record. I don’t now why, but the whole record sounds so cold, although there are lot’s of acoustic guitars in it. It is mixed to clean, all too perfect for a “rock-record”. The songs are (except SIMC and Harleys) too much polished. I heard a live-Version of “Run To You” on MTV, and it was light-years better than the studioversion.
So, maybe “Do You Wanna Go The Whole Way” would appear in a different light if it was used on another album with other songs.
To me the most boring and insignificant Rox-Song is “Making Love To You”. There is not even a real melody in it, just an uninspired and failed attempt to create a chorus.

I don’t think DYGTWW? is the worst either, it’s not the best but I still don’t skip it when I listen to C!B!B! And regarding how polished this record is, well Roxette is a very well-polished band to begin with, isn’t it? I still love C!B!B! and it has some very strong songs on it, including but not limited to SIMC, CBB, RTY,HAI,GTS, IS.

“And regarding how polished this record is, well Roxette is a very well-polished band to begin with, isn’t it?”
@IV ROX:
Yes, they have always been perfectionists. But I mean the atmosphere in the songs. It’s a misballance in the frequency-bands I think, the deeper sounds are missing somehow. Other Rox-Records are totally different. “Look Sharp” for example is definitely NOT cold. It is very synthetic, but has a warm sound all over. Or listen to “A Thing About You”, to take a “newer” track as example. Maybe a bit over-compressed, but very well balanced in the mix.
But that’s just the “view” through my ears. It’s very subjective, I know. And it is hard to explain.

DYWGTWW is one of my favourite C!B!B! tracks. The performance by Marie is really powerful, one of the sexiest performances ever, maybe as good as “(Do You Get) Excited?”
In my opinion, the worst C!B!B! song (and that I always skip) is “Lies”. It’s nothing but noise, and the lyrics are pure rubbish. I still wonder why they performed that crap live, the song doesn’t lead anywhere. I know some may love it, because is basically a guitar-driven song, but that’s not enough to save it.
Roxwriter, there are worse songs in the Roxette catalogue. The worst being “Make Me Head Go Pop”. A mish-mash of a ’supposed’ modern dance track with a cheap gospel choir in the middle. That’s what I call “one of the worst songs ever recorded in the history of pop music”.

Yeah i’d put MMHGP before DYWGTWW. I’ve always quite liked the song, starts slow-ish and works its way to great finish. The lyrics could have done with a little more work possibly, but I never thought it detracted from the album in any way though
Although if it wasn’t on the album, i don’t think i’d miss it.

I really like that song. Obviously it wasn’t good enough to make an album, but for what the song is meant to be (b-side), it’s a good listen.

Say what you like, I love DYWGTWW. I think it’s very interesting, unusual, one of the best Rox songs. I don’t know how to explain but there is smth special in this song. And CBB is immaculate album, there are no bad songs on this album to me. I agree it sounds cold somehow, but in a good way, also on CBB Marie sings especially good. The worst song ever to me is Stars (album version), that’s the only Rox song that I really hate. How come nobody mentioned it? I remember first time I heard it I couldn’t believe my ears, and video is so scary.

Do You Wanna Go The Whole Way? has always been one of my all-time favourite songs from Roxette. It’s such an immediate, desperate and SEXY song and Marie’s vocals are steamy hot!!! No, this should have been a single with a sexy video. A real hit, in my eyes!!
Do you really think this song could be worse than even “Cooper” or “Happy Together”. I still think Roxette should be sued by someone for EVER recording these 2 shitty songs!!
Every song on the CBB album is a gem. It’s just Roxette’s best album ever!!

’MMHGP’ still makes me cringe. Frankly, I never dared to play it out loud. My neighbors must know I have a good taste in music, so I don’t want to ruin my reputation by playing such a rubbish. I always skip it, it’s not even B-side class (some B-sides, like ’Crazy About You’ are superior).
If I were Per, I’d replace MMHGP with ’Entering Your Heart’. I don’t know what he was thinking about when he put the album together.
firstgirlonthemoon, nobody mentioned ’Stars’ because it’s not so hated among the fans. I never had a problem with it. Even my mum (she’s 53) likes both the song and the video, that’s a good sign, isn’t it?
abysmo said on April 3, 2008 02:50:
Not replace but add to the album. Entering Your Heart is probably one of the best Roxette songs and for sure the most DepecheModish Roxette song. :-) I never understand why somebody cripled this song by cutting more than half a minute from Japaneese version.

Btw when I asked my mother (she is 52 and thinks highly of Roxette) what Rox song is the worst to her, she said See Me, I totally disagree with her. I’ve also never had problems with Do You Wanna Go The Whole Way?. I truly like it. The song I like the least on Crash!Boom!Bang! is I’m Sorry, but hey, it turned out to be a huge hit in South America without even being a single! For me Crash!Boom!Bang! is most probably the only album with no “filler” songs, so to speak.

I guess eveyone have a “least favourite” song on every album. It´s not that you *hate* them, bur compared to some of the masterpieces we´ve been spoiled with during the years they´re not someting you crank up on you car stereo, perhaps.
My least favourites on each album are:
Pearls of passion: Like lover do (corny sounding bubble gum pop with a far to bouncy bass line)
Look Sharp: View from a hill (doesn´t fit with the other songs at all. Also, the only artist who can use saxophones and get away with it is Springsteen)
Joyride: Small talk (Tougher to chose one here since it´s an epic album but Small talk feels lika a doodle)
Tourism: How do you do? (No question here, kindergarten pop, although nice as a typical “one summer only”-hit)
Crash boom band: Vulnerable (Aouch, maybe the worst one ever. Per shouldn´t have sung this one.. even though the lyrics might require it?)
Have a nice day: Cooper (embarrasingly cheap Nick Cave knock off)
Roomservice: Try (just a little bit harder) (totally anonymous song that just passes from one ear thru to the other. I would have loved for Entering you heart to have replaced this one, since that on the other handm is a seriously underestimated song)
Thats my five cents! Maybe we should arrange for a vote on the WORST Roxette song ever ;-)
Cheerio!

I agree totally with what you said, “DYWGTWW” is horrible. Nevertheless, the worst song ever is “Try”. This song makes me puke. There’s also another track that sounds the same - “Hurt”. God that sucks ass.
whateveriam said on April 9, 2008 20:46:
Not just some. Lots. Luckily, the backing and production, musicianship, performance to an extent is what saves them from being trashy, cheesy, boring bubblegum pap-pop. Sadly, DYWGTWW didn’t manage to pull it off.
7-Twenty-7 said on April 9, 2008 22:15:
“Try” is one of my favourite tracks from the RS album. The lyrics have some sense, at least; an uplifting message. “Try” and “Fool” are very underrated for some reason. For “Hurt” I assume you meant to say “It Hurts”. Maybe the most painfull Roxette song, lyrics wise. The interpretation of Marie is really tragic as well.
The worst Roxette song ever is “Make My Head Go Pop”. The first time I played it I almost had a heart attack. I don’t know why such a piece of rubbish was allowed to take place on the album. “Physical Fascination” is awful too, but MMHGP is even worse.
Wicf said on April 10, 2008 17:08:
I quite don’t get describtion of HDYD as kindergarden pop. Sure, this song is cheery, funny, bublegum, but kindergarden pop? No way. My opinion, of course.
And about the weakest songs from Roxette’s albums:
LS - View From A Hill, Joyride - The Big L (I never understand why people dislike Physical Fascination), Tourism - Never Is A Long Time, CBB - DYWGTWW, HAND - It Will Take A Long Long Time, RS - Bringing Me Down To My Kness
MaMan said on April 11, 2008 05:16:
Crash!Boom!Bang! is one of the best albums Roxette ever made! And I always loved Do You Wanna Go The Whole Way! One of their best songs ever! Never Is A Long Time is also one of my favourites. I love their acoustic style!! I prefere those songs much more than songs like Crush On You, Make My Head Go Pop or Bringing Me Down To My Knees (I must confess, I don´t like them!). I think, Have A Nice Day is their weakest album. My favourite song from this one is Waiting For The Rain (would have been a great single!). Wish I Could Fly and Beautiful Things are nice. I like the rest, too, somehow - but it´s because of Marie´s voice and her all-giving, overwhelming way of singing and bringing life, emotions and sense into the music.
Per always said, Roxette´s music is “guitar-power-pop”. I´m afraid, he lost the Roxette-guitar somewhere in the late 90s :( ...
That´s my opinion...

Even Per agreed “View From A Hill” is bad. It’s just a filler (on an album that didn’t need any), everybody could live without it. It’s strange that in the LP version they dropped “(I Could Never) Give You Up” out instead, which is a song that all the fans tend to love. Strange decision.
“Never Is a Long Time” and “It Will Take A Long Long Time” are boring songs to my ears as well. I remember when I got the “Real Sugar” single I was expecting something different from the ’Modern rock version’, but it was almost the same. Where’s the ’modern rock’ supposed to be on that version??? They named that version in the wrong way.
I think their weakest album ever is “Room Service”. I remember Per said in the RoxBox book (which I don’t have myself, can anybody confirm this?) that “RS was not their most inspired moment”. I agree with him: it’s short and it does not convince me. Except of 4 or 5 good tracks, the rest doesn’t stand out. “Have A Nice Day” has a more consistent sound. You can love it or hate it, but it makes an impression for you, there’s no way to stay indifferent. RS, in the other hand, is too bland.

“Do You Wanna Go The Whole Way?” is a GOOD track, there´s no fillers on C!B!B!, that´s the best Roxette album ever! I don´t like RS album, “Bringing Me Down To My Knees” is a song absolutely out of sort, “The Centre Of The Heart” and “Real Sugar” I was firstly trying to take, but now I skip them over as well as the other RS tracks. On the other side I love “Entering Your Heart”, that´s a gorgeous song... why did it end up as a B-side track???
renegade said on April 12, 2008 00:38:

Now THATS Roxette, the way I knew them. I was dissapointed with that album, but positively surpriced by that last track. It left me wanting for more, but... I think there will be noting more like that ever again i´m afraid.
Im not in that in this perticular state of mind anymore doin´ powerchords and powerpop.. Well... then it´s not Roxette anymore. Then its maybe Gyllene..
My five cents, again,

@ncurran: I think “Cooper” is Gessle composing at his best, cos it’s kinda more than ordinary pop - as it was written for a symphonic orchestra (would be great for a NIGHT OF THE PROMS - we’re still waiting, Per ;-)). But, I admit, this is certainly a question of personal taste...
The song I dislike most is “Make My Head Go Pop”. That’s really awful - especially the synthesizer strings. “Opportunity Nox” is also not one of my favourites, I liked it in the beginning, but it gets worse the more often you listen to it.

It’s interesting, we always say the songs we like but never the ones we dislike. So, these are my less favourite Rox-songs:
POP: Goodbye To You
LS!: probably Cry.
J: The Big L and Physical Fascination. I don’t like these songs.
T: How Do You Do!, The Heart Shaped Sea.
C! B! B!: Fireworks, Vulnerable and Place Your Love. I always skip them.
HAND: I would say the whole album! But If I had to chose the worse ones, I would chose these ones: You Can’t... Beautiful Things and Cooper (I don’t know which one is the most boring) Waiting For The Rain, Anyone... It’s strange, in my opinion HAND is the worst Roxette album but it has the best Marie’s interpretations.
RS: The Centre Of The Heart, Looking For Jane, Make My Head Go Pop. I never listen to these ones.

I agree with most of you... I think that “Do You Wanna Go The Whole Way?” is a trashy, sexually charged song that gets one horny. It’s always been one of my most favourite songs of Roxette. I just love it!! And the way Marie sings it, makes you believe that she’s actually horny too...LOL
My least favourite songs of Roxette on their albums are:
Pearls of Passion - Call Of The Wild (pointless!!!)
Look Sharp! - View From A Hill (but only if I HAD to choose one - this song has really grown on me in the years)
Joyride - Soul Deep (It should never have been released on this album - it spoils the whole album!! I think Small Talk should also have been a single!!! It’s SO great!)
Tourism - Queen Of Rain (I LOVE the song, but it doesn’t fit Tourism - it’s too classy)
Crash! Boom! Bang! - Vulnerable (Per does NOT sound good on ballads, although the song probably is a masterpiece if sung by Marie [or Josh Groban])
Have A Nice Day - COOPER!!! (it’s fugly!! The worst song I have ever heard!), You Can’t Put Your Arms.... (I like the lyrics but it’s just too trashy and messy to make sense).
Room Service - the whole style of the album is eerie and demo-like, but I think all the songs are great... Especially “Fool” - should have been a single with a HOT video!
Would be interesting to hear some new material from Roxette in the following years!
