Plagiarism? Enrique Iglesias - "Free" vs. Per Gessle - "Stupid"

I just bumped into this song “Free” by Enrique Iglesias from 2003. It sounds very similar to Per’s “Stupid” from TWATG.

Here’s the link for a 30 sec snippet:

What do you think?

Sorry i dont, i think it sounds more like a funked up intro to the song “Piece of My Heart” lol.

Believe it or not, this song has come up on here before - like, 6 years ago, I think! In any case, I can’t remember what the verdict was, but there must be a strong similarity if people years apart come to the same conclusion...

Yeah, you are right, Robbie!! The intro sounds really like “Stupid”...

You’re right, Robbie. The rhythm guitar part in the beginning really sounds quite similar. But I don’t think that the song by Enrique Iglesias can be considered a plagiate of “Stupid” because I don’t think one can prohibit to use these chords combined with this rhythm in a song. And in my opinion the melody is quite different to “Stupid”. Therefore I think: no plagiate, but nevertheless sounds quite similar indeed.

who care enrique is so hot :)

Yes, indeed the intro sounds very much like Per’s Stupid!

yes!!!what a coincidence!!!???? per!!! you have a won judgment here!!!

It’s not just the guitar intro so similar, but the verses as well. Just listen and compare:

Enrique: “I wanna jump when you wanna jump”
vs.
Per: “Everything you do, you do so right”

which musically sounds also the same to me, the only little difference is just that, Enrique has this kinda unique feeling in his way of singing, his voice sort of a, I used to call it, gay feeling :-)))

It’s an obvious pattern of typical chords. Nothing special, no plagiatism. You will find it thousands of times through music-history. You also wouldn’t talk about plagiatism, if two different storywriters would use the sentence “a man was walking down the street”, would you? :-)

It sounds very similar!! Strange, isn’t it?

What about this one, hehehe...

It’s Bon Jovi’s “One Wild Night” intro (from the album Crush, 2000) which is 98% identic with Kix Cha Cha. Just a reminder, that Kix Cha Cha was born while Clarence was improvising something in the studio and they recorded it right away.

Per said on www.sonofaplumber.com website’s “Ask Per” section, that he never heard Bon Jovi’s song. Well, he should though :-)))
