Fireworks: Why does Per "misterioulsy" hate it?
Rox_Nox2003 said on November 9, 2006 21:09:
I knpw u have gone through this issue before but I am still haven’t got it right up til now.
coyboyusa said on November 9, 2006 22:43:
didn’t per say it was one of his worse vocal performances?
Booho said on November 10, 2006 01:23:
lol, he should have put less text into the verses ;)))
Anyway... Fireworks remains one of my favourites. Especially “They’re coming to get you.....” pure gooseflesh!!!
Sparvogamarie said on November 10, 2006 01:40:
God, Fireworks was always my fave song on CBB. I was so glad when it was a single, but it flopped of course :( Funny how our tastes are so different. Per thinks The Look is the greatest song ever written by mankind, and I think it’s ok but average. Fireworks is way better.
Zargo said on November 10, 2006 02:20:
It’s funny how originally Per thought ’The Look’ was a throwaway, but now it’s in his top five...
I’ve never gotten all that excited about it, for some reason.
Sparvogamarie said on November 10, 2006 02:32:
Wow Zargo, another fan who doesn’t like The Look! I thought I was the only one lol. It’s okay, I don’t DISlike it, it just never grabbed me, back then or now. Oh well, Per loves it, and the song gave us Rox, that’s what matters.
n-Somnia said on November 10, 2006 04:01:
If this is true, it probably explains why it’s never been on their previous greatest hits albums.
Hotblooded said on November 10, 2006 04:30:
It’s funny but only recently have I begun to really like ’The look’! I hated it when it was first released and always thought of it as an ’ok’ song nowadays I am enjoying it more and I don’t really know why?!
BTW Fireworks is a good song I love the live CBB version and Marie in the last chorus ROX!!
TheRain1981 said on November 10, 2006 05:56:
Yeah, it’s quite obvious that Per does not like “Fireworks”. It’s missing on the 1995 hits, 2003 ’Pop Hits’, the 2006 hits, and unfortunately on the ’RoxBox’ set. It makes me wonder why it was even picked as the 3rd single. Perhaps he liked it at the time and has since had different feelings about it. It’s too bad because I think it is worthy of inclusion at least on the ’RoxBox’! It’s one track that should not be missing from such a package. Well, that and “Fingertips ’93”.
Booho said on November 10, 2006 10:01:
I don’t really like The Look either, I will put Fireworks on my Roxette-fave-songs-CD, but not TL :)
Per, come on, do we have to show you how great Fireworks is??? :))
Wicf said on November 10, 2006 13:08:
Not including Fireworks on the Pop Hits was a sin, cuz this song rocks... And I don’t think it was a flop at all. And Per’s vocal performance is good. btw Per doesn’t like AU and I must agree with him, it’s an average pop/rock song, nothing more
Zargo said on November 10, 2006 13:47:
Per’s got crummy taste in music if he doesn’t like ’Fireworks’ or ’Almost Unreal.’
Maybe it was EMI’s decision to release it as a single... as good as CBB is, there’s not much on there that screams “SINGLE!” (but Fireworks does!)
mareo said on November 10, 2006 14:15:
My comment it’s not probably of great utility, ’cos I don’t know why Per hates it. I wonder why he put it (the Jesus Jones remix) on “Rarities”, since it’s a compilation that he personally made. I also cannot understand why there are so many negative comments from the Rox-camp about HAND in RS (unispired?) in the RoxBox.
Galadriel said on November 10, 2006 14:21:
If Per likes/hates his own songs is surely interesting, but not important for us (at least not primary!).
What’s important: he created them, so we are able to make our own choice to like or dislike. :-)
tavo said on November 10, 2006 14:26:
per vocals are not good? they´re awesome! this is a very difficult song to sing, especially this part:
I once knew a girl
I can’t remember her name but I remember her face
cos her sister looked the same.
They both left school, but they couldn’t find a job
So they said farewell and stole a small town car.
it´s difficult to say that the way he says it. and he was able to sing that live! the same way as in the record.
Booho said on November 10, 2006 15:08:
Hmm, I agree with their negative comments about HAND and RS.
A chance to learn from that and make it better in the next album.... when Per is inspired again ;)
vtech101 said on November 10, 2006 16:45:
@ tavo- it probably took Per a couple of deep breaths for him to manage (considering it’s almost two verses in one.) Fireworks was a great single off C!B!B! but, of course, it was never released in the United States. And another thing you will notice is that Per doesn’t sound the same live compared to the studio. I believe Per actually didn’t care for the single “Lies” which to me seemed very single “capable” (it was guitar driven enough...) but, we all remember the McDonalds story (blah, blah, blah,...) and the music change. Fireworks never saw its “wick” light!
Roxreporter said on November 10, 2006 19:34:
“Fireworks” is one of my favorite songs. I’d wanted it to be in the box, so it would be remasterd too.
Maybe on the next compilation :p
abysmo said on November 10, 2006 20:22:
Fireworks is one of Rox best songs. Great melody and great story, reminds me Aerosmith. Fireworks was title for new Roxette album in 1993, but then Per wrote song Crash! Boom! Bang! and title has changed.
Kathrin said on November 10, 2006 20:34:
Why would he hate it,even though it’s on the CBB Album?
That confuses me!
Rox_Nox2003 said on November 10, 2006 21:39:
That is also what I am trying to figure out:
- there must be something wrong with the song structure, or even with his vocals that he might not be so keen on.
In fact, despite the fact Per knows we love certain songs that he dislikes (cause we’re fans) we certaintly never cared for the songs he had no true faith on for some reason. Maybe it wasn’t his intention to release Fireworks as a single and therefore he managed to “leave it aside” on all hits compilations.
CBB album is a very strong in depth sort of album very grown up in style, music, lyrics (a big number of them), very mature to a certain extend and therefore a much more musical creation than a commercial album (that managed to sell more than 5 millions I guess) and be reasons for a massive world tour. But when it comes to “singles” I have almost the strange feeling that Per & Marie must have their faith on very few of them. The album is excellent as a whole and not so much when it comes to singles. Though for us fans any song according to our taste could have been one... Fireworks did undertake that task we love it ... but Per doesn’t. God knows why... :)
CoyRoy said on November 12, 2006 06:27:
If Per doesn’t like Fireworks, then why record it in the first place??
Personally, I think, it’s one of their all-time best. I love the fast way in which Per sings it! Really catchy. If I were Per, I would shoot myself in the foot for EVER recording a sh*tty song like “Cooper” or “Happy Together”. Those are probably the most horrible songs ANYONE has ever recorded.
FIREWORKS RULEZ!!!! It should have been on the Box, together with Lies & Love Is All....
Room_service said on November 12, 2006 07:11:
Cooper horrible? Sorry, I don’t agree. In fact, “Cooper” and “Fireworks” have something in common: they tell a story on its own. That’s not pretty usual in Roxette’s songs. And “Happy Together” is a nice story too! Maybe it’s not the best arrangement or the best performance, but the lyrics are clever. I like it, one of the best B-sides. The most horrible song must be “Make My Head Go Pop”, that’s teen-pop at its worst.
“Lies”? Way too repetitive! The worst song on CBB, along “I Love The Sound Of Crashing Guitars”. I never liked them, I skip both songs every time I plat that CD.
ncurran said on November 12, 2006 10:31:
I agree with Coyroy...Cooper is prob the worst song roxette ever recorded. A pity it ended up on the box, which is supposed to be a collection of their best. But of course, as always its a matter of taste
Booho said on November 12, 2006 10:39:
Lies is crap, Make My Head Go Pop is crap, Opportunity Nox is crap, Crush On You is crap, Bringing Me Down To My Knees is crap, Happy Together is crap, but Fireworks ROXXX!!!
Room_service said on November 12, 2006 22:40:
Opportunity Nox and Crush On You are cool, but this discussion is a bit pointless after all, because our tastes are always different.

Why?
I do not like “Queen of Rain” or “Do you get excited”, that everyone else seems to love.
So you’re very welcome! ;-)
whateveriam said on November 13, 2006 21:41:
Galadriel why? Cos I know a lot of people love that song!
ally77 said on November 13, 2006 23:44:
Fireworks is great and I love the video! One of my faves from Crash! Boom! Bang along with Run To You!
Galadriel said on November 13, 2006 23:58:
@whateveriam: I am in the good(?) situation that none in my circle of friends is “that much” interested into Roxette-music that someone would start to argue about it.
ally77 said on November 14, 2006 00:02:
Same here... although I rarely talk about Roxette with people who don’t know them!
AURYTE said on November 14, 2006 00:05:
I love Fireworks. When I bougth Crash!Boom!Bang! album, I played Fireworks something like at least 10 times a day. It was so catchy. But what surprises me most that my sister likes the video of Fireworks. I like it as well, though I think, that Roxette have better videos. So it really surprised me when my sister suggested to watch the video of Fireworks ;)

@harriej: LOL!! I think he meant to type “h-a-p-p-y- - t-o-g-e-t-h-e-r”... if so, that’s worse that any typo than coyboyusa ever made :-D
Still find it funny that we can all love the same band but have such HUGE discrepancies in which songs we like and dislike. I guess that’s to be expected after SO many songs have been recorded...
coyboyusa said on November 14, 2006 16:05:
not for nothing but make my head go pop and you can’t put your arms around whats already gone are by far alot worse than cooper, it’s funny how just a few threads above peopel vomited over a semi rap cover of ltyh and ycpyaag opens with a hip hop record scratching riff, lol kinda hypocritical isnt it
kielroxer said on November 14, 2006 17:31:
hmm. maybe because fireworks is just an average song. nothing special in here. an average poptune, nothing more. sure Every Mistake Imaginable choosed this track as a single. i think whats she like would have been the better choice. really nice melody. the synthi in the background is perfect!
whateveriam said on November 14, 2006 18:11:
’@whateveriam: I am in the good(?) situation that none in my circle of friends is “that much” interested into Roxette-music that someone would start to argue about it.’
Well, most of my friends like ’em a little, but not diehard, but I was talking about folkses here
CoyRoy said on November 14, 2006 18:21:
Lies and Crush On You are both great great great pop songs, with Lies adding a little spunk to the rock!!
Fireworks tells a great story, such as Cooper, but the arrangement and Per’s terrible vocals on the song makes it sleepy and oh oh oh so so so BORING. Per should have stuck to their motto: DON’T BORE US, GET TO THE CHORUS!! Happy Together is a great story, again, but the arrangements are SO demo-like and totally lack of imagination.
Fireworks takes you into a dream world with the fast lyrics and the cute story Per tells. Definately Roxette’s best moment!!
chrisjankunas said on November 14, 2006 18:26:
Fireworks is ok. As a single I would have preferred HArlays & Indians tho.
Oh and IMO Crush on You IS quite crap ;)
royalball said on November 15, 2006 05:44:
I don’t like Fireworks.
I never liked Queen of Rain either, don’t know why people like that song. I thought it was one of their worst singles, but to each is their own.
Roxreporter said on November 17, 2006 19:34:
Hmm, check this out.
In The Roxbox booklet, all song titles are printed in BOLD except...right... except Fireworks.
When the singles from CBB are summed up, SIMC, CBB, RTY and Vulnerable are printed in bold, and Fireworks in thin normal letters.
They really MUST hate the song ey.
Room_service said on November 17, 2006 19:44:
Roxreporter, I think the title is not printed in bold because the song is not included in the tracklist. I think they must have included all the singles they ever released. Only I Call Your Name, Chances, Fireworks and Fingertips ’93 are missing. And all the B-sides too. Turn To Me, Crazy About You and Entering Your Heart deserved their own place in the tracklist, while some other “album” tracks (like Waiting For The Rain and Never Is A Long Time) didn’t.
gessleism said on November 18, 2006 11:39:
I´ve never understood why FIREWORKS is always forgotten in every “Best Of” album... There are others songs included in those album that didn´t deserve it.
I prefer FIREWORKS instead of REAL SUGAR, for example.
In Spain, when the song was released C!B!B! went up in the charts again. The song helped C!B!B! to reach the amount of 200,000 albums sold in Spain. It wasn´t a failure... REAL SUGAR was a failure

Right.. my few cents to this discussion:
I doubt that he hates it.. at first the Crash! B! B! album was supposed to be called Fireworks. Why have the idea to name an album after a song you do not like???
Vocally this is actually one of the better tracks Per has recorded.. I love the lyrics and the paste and rythym he sings it in..
Aaaand I am also stunned why this song has not re-appeared on any other compilations etc.
davidc4 said on November 22, 2006 19:46:
does this mean people who bought the box can sue EMI for false advertising?
on the cover of the Rox Box it clearly states that it included all the hit singles....it clearly doesnt as Fireworks is missing and as i recall it was a hit single.
Sascha said on November 22, 2006 19:54:
They could always argue about the term HIT. Fingertips and Chances are missing too...

I understand that u don’t believe Per dislikes it, in fact no one really knows... but u ended up giving all the hints that tend to justify Per’s possible distaste on this song ... othewise what logical reason would explain having this song totally ignored on their collections. Per might have had some enthusiasm on this song when it was done... it is natural he felt the same at the time of release of HAND for this album... at the end of the year he realized the album was too “messy and too diverse” not so much as he would have liked it to be. So all doors are open for believing he mght have found also something on FW that he now distastes so badly up the point of ignoring the song when it comes to compilations. Just another maybe ... anyway.
Booho said on November 9, 2006 21:11:
Oh, he hates it?
Haven’t read everything about that yet... and well, I love it and it’s one of Per’s best stuff, but I can’t tell why he would hate it, and especially which part?
