Has anybody installed Windows Vista?
roxlad said on November 8, 2006 22:08:
I am trying the RC1 beta and it’s quite cool, please post here if you have it...

I’ve seen a sample of Vista. I think it’s excellent!
They’ve streamlined everything and made it easier to use.
I don’t yet have it on my PC.
thenicekai said on November 9, 2006 11:08:
I tried it on a second partition. It looks good but it didn’t have enough drivers for all my hardware, so I had to delete it again. You need a pretty fast CPU and at least 1 GB Ram to have fun with it. I think it will be an interesting OS, but so far I’m quite satisfied with my XP.
For those who speak German, there is a source for more info, faq and downloads: http://winfuture.de/vista

No, I already have Mac OS X Tiger since 2005 and Leopard is just around the corner: http://www.apple.com/macosx
No need to downgrade... ;-)
FirstGirlOnTheMoon said on November 9, 2006 11:43:
I haven’t seen it myself, but I once heard that there are some “issues” with the licence agreement. I heard that the license agreement allows you to only install Vista ONCE. That is, if you want to format your PC that already has Vista on it, you’ll need to buy a second licence. :S
I don’t know if that’s entirely true and whether or not they changed it, though.
thenicekai said on November 9, 2006 11:52:
They changed it. The latest version of the EULA says that you are free to change your hardware as often as you want.

I’ll stick with Winblowz2K for now. Less of a resource hog.
roxlad said on November 9, 2006 23:19:
@LittleSpookey windblows *lol*
@Judith yes, you can install the final beta release RC1 (release candidate 1) directly from Microsoft. It’s free, legal and working until 31st May 2007. All you have to do is to register on the MS site (I logged in with my old MSN account instead) and download either the 32bit (3GB) or 64bit (4GB) version depending on your cpu. Burn the iso file on DVD. They send you a unique registration code (licence) and then you can install it. You don’t need any previous legal or whatsoever MS OS.
I have posted this here on TDR because everything works fine for me except from iTunes and Zone Alarm, no problems with the drivers for me. I wanted to share experiences as I try it...
The only warning.... if you use WinXP automatic transfer of setting and files and create a recovery file, it won’t work on Vista so you have to transfer your favourite links, e-mail messages etc by hand or use a program from Microsoft to be installed on WinXP before the transfer.

I’ve been using RC2 for the last few months on a seperate drive. I quite like it, but i think i might need a little more RAM to get the most out of it.
If i can get a copy at a reasonable price when it’s released then i’ll stick with it, otherwise i’ll go back to XP.
There are some things that get annoying though, the UAC really drove me nuts till i turned it off.
roxlad said on November 10, 2006 11:00:
@RobS what’s the UAC????
There are a few things that I don’t like too but fortunately it’s quite customable.
PS. I have 1GB of RAM, it’s ok but I have noticed that 256MB are shared memory to use for video memory (I have a 256MB real video memory) so I will have to upgrade to a 512MB video card or increase the system memory.
RobS said on November 10, 2006 14:36:
@Roxlad, User Account Control some protection feature to stop you doing things that only admin should be allowed, or something like that. Almost everytime i tried to do something or run a program, a dialog pops up “do you want to proceed... bla bla ba”
per_mson said on November 10, 2006 19:18:
I have also used RC2 for some time, but I used it on my old PC with only 750mb memory, so it was not the funniest there! ;) What I didn’t like so much was that there was hardly any drivers for my devices, but that is something that will hopefully get better as soon as it is released for real. All in all I think it looks really great and after some time I am sure one is getting used to the new stuff as well.
But now I will wait to install it on my newer PC (with 1.5 Gb memory)until the real release is out. :)
roxlad said on November 10, 2006 20:59:
@RobS, I see... yes that is quite annoying!
@Per... so is RC2 older than RC1???? The only driver I cannot find is for my Aver Media Digital Terrestrial TV card and they told me it will never be released! I’ll have to sell it on the eBay to somebody who’s planning to use WinXP for still a long time.
RobS said on November 11, 2006 00:06:
@roxlad - “so is RC2 older than RC1????” beta 1 > beta 2 > RC1 > RC2 > RTM (release to manufacture) ie Final release.
per_mson said on November 11, 2006 09:44:
@roxlad: As RobS says the RC2 is newer (Release Candidate 2). But I had a weird issue. In RC1 I had no problems, but in RC2 Windows refused to install my soundcard (an old Soundblaster) correctly. I also didn’t get my Scanner to work (Epson 1670) in any of the versions.
Today the RTM (final release) has leaked! :-))

I have two problems with my Vista. When I use Nero (latest version) the GUI changes into the one of Win95!!!! I have to restart to get back to normal. Also when I use iTunes scrolling doesn’t work. I have Win Vista RC1 64bit... is there a way out????
Jud (moderator) said on November 11, 2006 21:51:
now all other software + hardware companies will have to adapt drivers + so on to Vista :)
ally77 said on November 12, 2006 08:51:
I look forward to this and hopefully will upgrade my laptop with it to give it a try perhaps sometimes next year!
Whilst we are talking about windows and new releases, has anyone here download Internet Explorer 7. I really like it especially the tab feature! Also there is a new Windows Media Player 11 as well which is good… but one thing with that is I can’t find the options tab to alter my settings? It’s driving me nuts
RobS said on November 12, 2006 10:37:
@roxlad - i believe there was/is a problem with Java and the new Aero interface which causes that problem. But from what i know Nero doesn’t use Java??
About the tabs on IE7, it’s about time they put them in. Other browsers have been using them for years. Once i found out about them a few yrs ago I get annoyed having to use a browser that doesn’t have them.
@Ally - press the ’Alt’ key the menu will popup. There should be an option in there to keep it there if you don’t like pressing ’Alt’ to access it.
per_mson said on November 12, 2006 13:24:
One nice thing with the tabs in IE7 is the overview button one get at the very left of the tabs. No idea if other browsers has that (tried a few, but never liked them. So I’ve always used IE).
Anyone knows if IE7 support CSS better (CSS3 perhaps) than the old versions did??
Jud (moderator) said on November 12, 2006 15:22:
I think I stick to FF, faster, nicer to user for me :) Even though I don’t use the tab browsing, I always have 101028x windows open :P
tevensso (moderator) said on November 13, 2006 20:58:
I’m running Vista Ultimate - real version, it looks great but I haven’t really tasted it yet. IE7 looks OK, but Ff got installed immediately. :)

ally77 said on November 13, 2006 21:58:
I could never get on with FF... maybe I’ll re-install it and try again!
roxlad said on November 13, 2006 22:05:
@RobS Java??? I’m not sure Nero uses it. I have found out that Windows Vista can write +/-rw in UDF like InCD, that’s great! I still don’t know if it writes with verify though which is essential. WinXP does the same with dvd-ram but only using FAT32 file system.
About IE7... the feature I like the most is the zoom. I have a screen resolution of 1280x1024 and TDR articles are in very small print no matter if I tell the browser to use large fonts! This way everythings gets zoomed and readable.
ally77 said on November 13, 2006 22:46:
@ Roxlad...
I know the feeling since I upgraded the computer my bigger screen means I am sat here straining to read certain websites! I think I am just about use to it now...
RobS said on November 14, 2006 08:47:
@Tevensso: I didn’t think there was a final version available yet?
roxlad said on November 14, 2006 21:30:
@ally... yep! you do get used to it in the end but you could experience a feeling of having heavy eyes.... so if you can use the zoom feature!!
per_mson said on November 16, 2006 07:42:
@RobS: If you read my post from the 11/11 I said the final release was out that day. ;)
RobS said on November 16, 2006 11:59:
I thought he might have had a legit version from somewhere. At the time i didn’t think there was a legit version available. Turns out MSDN subsribers were able to download it.
tevensso (moderator) said on November 17, 2006 19:06:
My version is legit, got it from a friend at M$ for evaluation.
ally77 said on November 19, 2006 14:06:
I would like to try it! From what I here it’s worth it... maybe next year!
RobS said on November 21, 2006 12:00:
From the time that i’ve spent using Vista so far, i have to say i quite like it.
I’m sure after it’s been out a while and they’ve released a service pack or two, it will end up being even better.
The only thing that i don’t like is the high price for the retail versions. I think i read Ultimate was around AU$750. Quite staggering, and the other releases around AU$450.
LittleSpooky said on November 21, 2006 13:14:
I think it’s funny that Microsoft got behind the 8-ball when it came to tabbed browsing (as in they were like the LAST browser to go to it). I use FireFox for all my browsing needs with the exception of a small handful of websites that are IE specific (my school’s website won’t work in FF, only IE). In my opinion, anything attached to M$ is bloated, not very user friendly, and is a memory / resource wh - ... uh, hog.
Only reason I’m still using W2K is because some of my hardware’s “old” and there’s no guarantee Puppy Linux will have the drivers for it (my soundcard doesn’t specify support) and I have a screensaver builder program that I bought that is Winblowz specific only. Other than that... M$ can drop dead as it costs you an arm, a leg, and your first born child to upgrade. Puppy = FREE.
No Matter Where you Go, There You Are.

Why install Windows Vista if there is something better called PCLinuxOS?
PCLinuxOS is much Cheaper than Windows and it has more Security( I Mean no Spyware)

Is that some kind of Linux distribution? I think the problem with Linux is that it’s not very user friendly, I mean you have to be a guru to know how to configure it etc... maybe I’m wrong ’cos I have never tried it, and what about compatibility? I have a friend that has Linux and everytime he wants to update his hardware he has to struggle to find a device driver for Linux, that’s what puts me off.
Jud (moderator) said on November 8, 2006 22:37:
is the beta anywhere for download? :)
