Nokia 6233 or SE W810i?
Jud said on November 4, 2006 16:52:
So my lovely Nokia 3650 is broke, some of they keys won’t work anymore.. *sniff* it has been such a great piece of cell phone, had it for over 3 years and had no problem at all with it, it even fell into water last June and after leaving it 2 days alone to dry itself inside, it was working perfectly again... until Tuesday, when the keys 1,2,3,0 won’t type anymore :( Besides that, it was a free one, so I could use it in Spain too with my Spanish SIM..
So I’m looking for a new one, since I don’t want to spend much money on it, and since I got an offer with T-Mobile through the company I work at, I’ve got to choose between the Nokia 6233 and Sony Ericsson W810i.
I must say I only use my cell for phoning and smsing, sometimes I take pictures, but that’s not its primary job. I play music on other devices, surely not on a cell ;)
So my questions: do you have any experience with any of the 2? heard anything good/bad about them? I’ve read some reviews but they are both +- the same for the 2 cells..
Thanks :)

My boss got a Nokia 6233 as a replacement for his car phone after having been “bullied” into buying a Nokia by everybody (even I recommended that). A colleague of mine has the 6230i and is satisfied with it. If you had a Nokia so far, I’d stick to Nokia.
(Best would be to try both out. Just go to a big electronic store like MediaMarkt/Saturn and take a look at them, maybe you can even try them.)

I’m a fan of Nokia’s (had 3 so far) so i tend to tell people to go for them as well. I’ve used Motorola’s and Samsungs and don’t like the way the menu’s and such work.
I used any of the SonyEricsson phones though, they might be very nice.
If you can check them out and see how they work then make a decision from there might be the best way.
Otherwise go for the Nokia :-)

I don’t mind the looks of it or the menu, I’m more interested in hearing stories of problems with firmware and so on ;)

I love the SE’s phones. I have a k510a because I couldn’t afford for a w810 :-(
So if you can buy it, go for it, now!!!

I havent used the mp3 player yet BUT im worried that the battery will go flat straight away leaving me without my phone! does anyone know how long they last, or when the phone gets older and loses battery power how the mp3 player copes?

Sticking to Nokia just because you had one before is not a reason in my world! I instead look to where I get the most for my money at that specific time.
And I would actually not recommend anyone to buy a Nokia for the moment. They have had serious problems with quality lately and are getting back phones like crazy that stopped working.
So I would instead recommending Sony Ericsson, Siemens, Motorola or something like that.

I went to the store to check both cell phones.
1. Menu: I didn’t find SE’s menu confusing or difficult at all, I easily found my way in both cells to change language, some settings in the display, send SMSs, games, play mp3s and set the alarm for the whole week :) It was easy in both.. so I didn’t understand why people say SE’s menu is complicated?? I think it’s even more logic than Nokia :S
2. The only drawback with the SE were the keys, they are rather small compared to the Nokia, and it wasn’t too comfortable to write SMSs (which is what I do the most with my cell, sms!) - the other thing is that while you turn on the walkman/mp3 player, the phone is “off” -> phonecalls go to the voice box and sms aren’t delivered until walkman is off.. At least this is what the guy told me. Could anybody confirm?

I just got a new Sony Ericsson W850i this week, it’s really nice.
I had problems with SE a few years back they use to break easy but I heard good things about the latest models so I decided to try it....
I am really impressed with this one, and it’s handy that it doubles as an MP3 with a 1GB memory card but I’ve only got as far as adding contacts at the moment!
Nokia have served me well for years, but I found each model never really changes much, my last phone was the 6111 it was not all that old but I get bored with technology very easy! Mind you I did break the screen on my old one when I dropped it so it was time for a new one!

So I am curious Judith which did you choose in the end?
I have a friend who just got the Nokia 6233 - It’s nice...
Jud (moderator) said on November 16, 2006 05:57:
Nokia :)
I’m still playing with it, didn’t have time to copy over all contacts and such, so still using the old one, but will do the switch this weekend :D
ally77 said on November 16, 2006 07:39:
That the downside of changing phone copying over stuff... and making the settings for yourself....
Jud (moderator) said on November 19, 2006 12:35:
I don’t mind so much about the settings, I like playing around with new toys :D
And I found out it’s not such a bad idea to go through my contacts again, I found some numbers/names I don’t even know who they are anymore, I don’t need to keep them using space in my cell do I? :) I also found some entries double, so well, a bit of cleaning and re-org won’t hurt.
So far so good :)

Sorry micro! The one I spotted here in the UK has a 128 mb one but only for a limited time! Same here no USB but they are really cheap on eBay! :)
RobS said on November 20, 2006 07:03:
Watch out for some of the really cheap cables on Ebay. I bought one, and it took me a month of installing/reinstalling/deleting drivers etc. so the comp could detect it. In the end i gave up and ordered another one. Alot of people have had the same problems.
ally77 said on November 20, 2006 08:24:
My last cable for my Nokia came from eBay it was fine..... and I’ve ordered the new one from the same seller!
Jud (moderator) said on November 20, 2006 20:36:
where did you buy it in the end? the Nokia original cable is rather expensive..

Both cables that I ended up getting were aftermarket knockoffs. The first I had troubles with, the second was fine. They were both from eBay, just different sellers, and different cables - even though they looked the same.
Jud (moderator) said on November 21, 2006 18:48:
ok, I will have a look at ebay :)

I’d go for the Sony! Everyone I know who owns that Nokia have had something go wrong.
