I love the Queen, but when Prince Charles ascends the throne, I will probably become a strong advocate for Canada to become a republic....
ally77 said on September 13, 2006 07:39:
I can never see Charles taking the throne, I think he will bypass it to his son!

**cut glass English accent* ’Oh no not me, one will survive, oh I’ll be jsut like my mother and I’ll live to 95, so Charles can wait and wait, but I’m not going to abdicate, Oh I’ll survive, one wsill survive, hey hey!...’
Sorry, had to put that bit from Spitting Image, gotta love I Will Survive!

I have nothing against the Queen personally, but don’t agree with monarchy. I find it quite infuriating that my country’s head of state is not Australian and instead lives 30,000 kilometres away in a country that bears no relevance to Australia. Whilst the Queen’s role of head of state in Australia is somewhat symbolic, considerable power is still held by the Queen eg an Australian prime minister was removed from office by the Queen in the late 1970s (via her representative in Australia ) and just recently same sex civil union legislation enacted in the Australian Capital Terriroty (similar to a state but with less rights) was overriode by the Australian government with the blessing of the Queen (again via her Australian representative).

Queen doesnt have that much power ? do you really think she gets involved with your parliment ? just just puts her sign to documents ? parliment decides the things.
brentnewtown said on September 16, 2006 11:09:
I imagine she cares nothing for Australia and vice versa. The problem is that a person who holds the power she does should be a person who is involved in the Australian community and understands what is going on here.

I do agree... I still find it strange that the Queen is regarded as the Head of Australia.... I mean how many times can you fit the UK in Australia!
... We can always loan you Prince Charles and Camilla... lol
brentnewtown said on September 16, 2006 12:32:
I think monarchies are outdated period. Having a foreign monarch just makes it more crazy.
