Hello!
On a TV-Show (Sat 1, Chartbreak-Hotel) Per performened a version of Joanna Says WITHOUT fading out. The song hat a real end!
Is there any release, where this full version of the track can be found?
I don’t understand why they shortened it for the album.
Bye,
Mario.

I always prefer definate endings tosongs rather than just fade outs. Whoever invited the fade out should be hung up. It’s just lazy. The artist has gotta figure out an ending should they perform live anyway, so why not do one for the CD??

I guess they can afford being lazy in cd recordings, and then, they have to make an effort when playing it live :) Anyway, I like the song the way it is in the album.

But the point is: they where NOT lazy, because there is an ending that was recorded! It just was not used on the album for reasons I don’t understand (I really have doubts that they rerecorded an ending just for playback-situations and added it to the original track later :-) It must be recorded during the original sessions, cause the arrangement is also filled with horns and so on)
I’m not against fade-out generally. Some songs really need to fade-out, because it gives the music something like an open or hypnotic end. especially if you have repeating elements in a song that develope during the last quarter of a track (for example the instrumental-motive at the end of Spending My Time).
But “Jo-Anna...” is one of those tracks that sound nice when they REALLY end. As well as I still don’t understand why “Do you wanna be my baby” has a fade-out.

There are also endings to Soul Deep, Secrets That She Keeps and a few other songs they have performed “live”. The Soul Deep ending is great...

Yeah I like the Soul Deep ending too. I like the Lies ending from CBB tour as well.

Why not release the mentioned versions in the Rox Box?
Not “Jo-Anna” of course, but the Roxette titles...

Well, in my opinion, if you’re recording something, you have to finish it at some moment. They can just stop playing when they think it’s enough for the fade out... or make it finish “really” (as some of you like to say), and later during the production decide it sounds better with a fade out, so cut the ending off.
Maybe there are more “real” endings than what you think but simply they were never heard because they cut them off during the production.
But I don’t think it’s just a matter of the song or of being lazy or hard-working. I think how a song starts or ends has to depend also on the neighbouring songs within the record and on whatever they want to convey with the song in particular.
In any case, I think it’s a good idea to record an ending for playbacks. In playbacks the thing is that you believe they’re actually playing, and when there is a fade out it looks just foolish...
By the way, something I hate is when songs merge with one another, especially on CDs. In that case you can have two problems. Either the ending is too abrupt or it really overlays, and you never get a satisfying sensation when you only want to hear to that song and nothing else.

Then you will have some problems with “Tourism” :-)
You’re right, it’s terrible, especially when you make an compilation or playlist. But on the other hand it can improve an album when everything belongs together and some songs are connected in a certain way.
Like “I was so lucky” and “Stars” for example, although they are so different.

They’ve made it for playback situations.
