In all Christian countries it is such a taboo that no one “dares” to say it, so they invent all types of denominations. This prohibition is what drives the imagination of people.
Come to think about it, most slang is about sex, sex services, drugs and stuff of that kind.
Conclusion: slang is born from need to express things that the status quo (long in history the church or other moral leaders) didn’t allow to speak up.
And if you wonder, yes, there are many words in Spanish as well... and in Catalan... (those are the languages of the cultures I live in).

I dont really agree with that. Perhaps in the past, yes, but not now. This is proved by the fact that a lot of the slang words in english are more offensive than the original. ’Masturbation’ as a word is quite clinical and unoffensive, if somewhat embarassing. However ’wanking’, its most common slang alternative in the UK, would be considered a lot more crude.

(Note: Of course Christian morals are not the only oppressive morals, but they are the ones I know the most about)

@Lawyer: It may be you’re right about it being a short term relief, but come to think of this: isn’t explaining that everything is the will of one or several gods a kind of “intellectual masturbation”? I mean it in the way you put it, as “short term relief to our depressions”. I’d say instead of short term, the “easy relief to our depressions and our fear”. It’s like kids saying: “well, we’re not in charge, we’re not responsible, we’re at the mercy of a powerful being...”.
There is a deeper meaning in the Universe than the simplistic wills of vindictive gods and random fairies.
I don’t mean to be cruel against people who believe in religions. But I do think religions are not good intellectual frameworks.

There are still no definite answers about what exactly causes it but recent research has suggested that it is almost certainly genetic, and also it may depend on how much testosterone you mother produced when you were in the womb. I cant believe that people still defend these obscure theories!
