Has Anybody Else Been Carjacked?

I was in Liverpool on Saturday night on my way to pick my mate up from work when i was carjacked by a scally lad in trackies.he drove me for what seemed like miles before i managed to get the keys out of the ignition at a red light.he got out of the car and went to the passenger door to try and get the key back off me but i locked the doors just in time.the key was bent so the car wouldnt start at first and the lad started to kick the car and pretended he had a gun in his pocket.the car started and i drove away and asked a taxi driver the way back to Liverpool City Centre where i parked up and called my mate who came and sat with me and gave me some money to sort the key out.I couldnt get the cart started again and found out 8 hours later that the chip inside the key had fallen out. i found it on the car floor and managed eventually, after a few people had bought me sandwhiches and showed me buses to get,to get home.i usually lock my doors at all times no matter what and i will never forget to do it again.has anybody else had anything similar happen to them?

on a lighter note i had both The Ballad Hits & Pop Hits in the car and NOBODY steals Roxette off me!

It’s too bad you didn’t have a pistol at hand... though meting out justice likely would have ruined your passenger-side window... the bullet, and the hijacker’s blood, bone and brain tissue.

Hope you are ok!!

When driving thru Liverpool (and certain other places).........lock your doors!

Mine lock automaticaly as part of the alarm, when the engine is running the doors are locked unless I unlock them, when the engine is off they unlock.

OMG what a horrible experience!! I swear i would have castrated the dude with a cigarette (or atleast clean he’s ears with a burning one!!)

Trust you are ok... and thank God i’ve never been in that situation myself; touch wood!

Im going to be in south africa for 3 months and ive just taken out travel insurance and i made sure it included car jacking as it happens a lot out there...its happened to my wifes family quite a few times (she is south african)....

although you dont here much about it over here in the uk....

scary stuff

i meant to mention Jo’burg in particular - i didnt mean the whole of SA as a general rule....

Hope you are alright after that.

Never happend to me, although once some guys did confront me and a few others, asked for our phones/money, we just turned around and ran!! lol luckily they didn’t have any weapons or anything.

Yeah even I’m scared shitters of JHB!! I will never trade Cape Town for another City... well not unless i’ve got good reason to!

well be in cape town in november time - flying from j;burg and then hiring a car coz we dont want to drive in our own or have our own car hijacked - cant wait to see cape town in all its glory - been to SA 4 times now but this will be my first in CT. So excited !!!!!!

Luckily, I’ve never had this experience. Even though I work in Johannesburg and live in a city close by. Although, most businesses moved away from the city centre, so it is quite safe here where I work.

The key is to stay out of the streets late at night and avoid places where you might be vulnerable.

It’s quite ridiculous actually. I received a 8 page document the other day on how to avoid being hi-jacked!

do you live in a gated development?

“gated development”, I like that description… If you’ve been here before, then you’ll know that pretty much everything is a “gated development”. LOL.

If you mean in a security complex with boom-gates and access control and such, then no. I live in an apartment building (with many gates, I might add). But it does not have a security guard or any way of controlling who comes in and leaves the building.

im fine after it it was awful though i have taken to keeping a pocket knife in the car now though only would ever use it in extreme circumstances thogh

@First Girl

yeah thats what I meant...some of Debs family live in these and some of her family dont - still strange for me to have to unlock the gate just to get from the living room out into the garden!!

thats cultural difference for you though...

unfortunatley if you were to injure someone with that pocket knife who was trying to steal your property you’d be in the wrong.

and that is where the laws in this counrty are all f***** up!

and Vix is right, the laws in the country suck big time.... you know I can get verbally threatened from Neighbours and shouted at with abuse in the street and the police do nothing...

I know own a baseball bat.... which sits nicely by the door with it’s ball! (if it has a ball it’s not actually seen as for protection only... and I do ocascassionaly swing it outside in the garden with the dog.... just as well I have a big garden! lol

@ natasha

You might call it a cultural difference, I call it a shame.

I do however hope that you will have a nice, safe stay in our country.

i dont think it depends on the country just that certain people i.e that scally that carjacked me, like to do whatever they want.alot of people think Liverpool is rough but they are the friendliest people i know

I’d rather live in Liverpool that the shit hole I am in now.... more friendly...

depends where you live in Liverpool ;-)

like most towns and cities in Britain ( yes even Oxford!! remember seeing BlackBird Leys on the tv all them years ago??)

davidc4, think twice about carrying a pocket knife... that can get you in serious trouble. If you are pulled by the police and found to be carrying one. A key can hurt, just get your keys and ram one of those at them. Anything just to get yourself out of there, but you don’t want to end up in trouble for something that in all likelihood will never happen again.

I’m female and I tend to lock my car doors when I am driving anyways, as i’ve known people have their bags stolen when they stop at lights etc.

I hope you are ok after your experience. :(
