Polygamy

There is new show on HBO called Big Love. I just saw few episodes, and I LOVE them! I think this is gonna be my new fav shows.

The shows about a guy (played by Bill Paxton) who has three wifes.

I was wodering what do you guys think about Polygamy?

Also, do u think that goverment should control on how many husband/wifes we should have (I’ve learnt that USA law againts polygamy, but I might be wrong) ?

If you agree with Polygamy, do u think that woman can have as many husbands as they want?

Do ever consider of doing that?

I personally prefer to dedicate myself to one person only and I expect the same from that person but I think that if a man loves two women (it can happen) he should be allowed to do so. Same thing for a woman loving two men.

When I was 20, I was in love with a girl I had known for about five years. After high school, we left our home town for separate colleges... and, in time, it became apparent that she was doing more at her college than merely studying. At the same time, when we were together (during summer, holidays and so forth), we seemed completely devoted to one another, and had GREAT times.

But, however, around 20, she developed a serious relationship with a guy at her school. He was a young (mid-20s) classroom instructor, and the two of them were, pretty much, shacking up.

When this came to light between us, this girl – audacity personified – seriously told me that one of “the major differences between men and women is that a woman can simultaneously love two men, while a male can only love one woman at a time.”

The implication, of course, was that she loved both me AND the dude up with whom she was shacking, giving her unfettered license to enjoy time (and money etc) from both of us. Which, realized in retrospect, was a big load of HORSE MANURE.

Human beings have evolved to the point where one man, truly and honorably, can love just one woman, and vice-versa.

The object of your love and sexual attraction, be you male OR female, is a perfect reflection of your highest personal values. I believed, at the time, that that girl was the best young woman in the world, and I had absolutely no interest whatever in anyone else. It tore me apart to think she did not reciprocate, wrenched me to understand that she could shack up with (and, eventually marry [then later divorce]) some other guy... while simultaneously professing to love ME too.

For many years after she flushed me, I questioned my own mindset regarding such concepts. Only more than a decade later, after I learned that she had endured a series of botched marriages, did I understand how FOULED UP her thinking had been – and that she really wasn’t the type of person worthy of my devotion.

Be you male or female, straight or gay or whatever, your true love – which reflects the best within you – can focus upon only one other individual at a time.

THAT is why all the polygamists we see are, in a word, KOOKS.

I don’t know if kooks would be the word I would use. Especially since, Oldag, you were never really in a polygamous relationship. The girl you were dating is what is referred to a slut or a whore.

Polygamy is 1. The condition or practice of having more than one spouse at one time. Also called plural marriage.
2. Zoology. A mating pattern in which a single individual mates with more than one individual of the opposite sex.

Taken from http://www.dictionary.com (which also has reference to Mirram-Webster’s and other sources that cite pretty much the same definition all the way across). And unless you’re referring to the zoological term Oldag, you were played. Simple.

As for my thoughts on polygamy, bigamy, paoyandry, et al.: I’m somewhat “territorial” when it comes to my relationship. Sure, my significant other can be friends with / hang out with other women or his buds or whatever, but as long as it’s a “mutually exclusive” relationship, life’s good. My last relationship was good, but a collosal failure at the same time. However, I couldn’t imagine sharing him with anyone else. And as he saw it:
“A man can only take so much nagging!”
Another co-worker of mine once said:
“For women, it’s finding the ’perfect’ mate to propigate the species with. She ’settles down’ in the nest and he takes care of her. For men, it’s ’survival of the species’. The more women he beds, the better his chances of producing offspring to carry on the lines, as it were.”

That’s a primitive (and long-winded) way to look at things. The trouble now-a-days is: You’ve got these polygamists (Warren Jeffs, the Kingston Clan, and a few others) who are clouding up the gene pool and pretty much ensuring that their lines become so convoluded it’s not funny. You can’t marry a niece to her uncle and expect a child free from birth defects that comes with breeding within the blood lines. You can’t marry first cousins either. That’s pretty much what you see in the news when it comes to polygamists: People marrying within their families, and usually forced.

I guess, if it boils right down to it:
If the women are happy to share one man, fine. If the men are brave enough to have that many women as spouses, fine. Don’t ask me to participate, or have the desire to belong to that. I’d be happy with a 1 on 1 relationship.

Biologically speaking, it’s the female who instinctually goes around looking for the best male to fertilize her eggs. So that you know, her children are genetically strong. that’s why what polygamists do, like spooks described, is highly unnnatural and highly stupid, and it will eventually lead to them wiping themselves out.

i am ok with polygamy and I am gay, but the show also shows the very evil side of polygamy where you have like 809 yr old pedophiles marrying 15 yr old girls....its ok so long as the women aren’t forced into it, frankly I’ll never understand the desire to marry period its so unnatural

LittleSpooky, the polygamists would probably argue that nieces marrying uncles is a totally different thing from polygamy. I don’t have enough information to say more, since I’m not from Tennessee or West Virginia. Everybody in those states is related to everyone else. Uncle Daddy. Cousin sister. Brother nephew. Sister wife. You name it. Scientists have tested DNA there, and it all yielded what appeared to be a whole bunch of typographical errors made by monkeys locked in a room with typewriters.

You’re right, it is different:

It’s called INCEST. However, I suggest you do your research before doing a lot of posting on things. Polygamy is usually reserved for a “plural marriage”, not sleeping with a slut.

Lol Spooky.

I agree that we’ve evolved to the point where polygamy just cannot work. And to answer your question majdy, even if it did work i’d be against it.
