About "MTV's European Top 20"

How come “Queen Of Rain” was #3 in this chart, and “Crash! Boom! Bang!” only #19? How come “You Don’t Understand Me” was #11 and “Stars” only #19? Am I the only one who can see no logic in this stupid chart?

There is logic since Crash Boom Bang wasn´t a big hit when it was released. When DBGTTC came out, i never understood why CBB or Vulnerable were included in a “international hit colletion” They were a hit only in some territories.
Also, I remember many people saying that if CBB and Vulnerable were included, why not QOR.
Wicf said on January 16, 2006 15:05:
I don’t think QOR was a BIG hit... I think C!B!B! was bigger hit, but that’s only my opinion...
About Vulnerable - they included it on The Greatest Hits album, because it did well in Sweden.

As regards the compilation, I think it doesn’t matter if those songs were not big in the charts, many “non fan” people know them all the same and that is the most important thing. Regarding MTV Top 20, I cannot tell you actually, but in my opinion “You don’t understand me” is a very good song. I think you shouldn’t underrate it like that.

Sometimes I wnder also why some songs get more attention as another, although that one is better. here in our local radio station they really like to play Vulnerable a lot, although it was not so high in german charts as Listen to your heart, which is not played that often....
But about MTV: I have really no clue...

@arnie: I’ve heard Real Sugar was a big hit in Argentina. Is it true?
gessle-addict said on January 19, 2006 06:33:
Real Sugar was aired quite well on argentinian radios but not as much as TCOTH & M&T&H, those were hits, actually.

Roxette never had big 2nd singles with the exception of “Fading like a flower”.

Dressed for success as the fallow up single of “The look” was also quite a big hit, sales way probably bigger than any first single since SIMC.
As far as I remember are the European Top 20 also based an airplay-charts.
For QOR, it was at least in Germany far higher in the Charts than CBB (19 to 31). So it’s just logical that it was higher on the European Top 20. The Video of QOF was also on heavy rotation on MTV, while CBB was definitly the beginning of end of Roxette’s popular time on mtv.

The MTV Europe chart is based on their playlists (the biggest selling singles take time to appear on the chart if they do at all), airplay and sales (possibly both album and singles).
I think Queen of Rain charted better cos Roxette was so hip back then (according to MTV).
animalkingdom said on January 20, 2006 17:13:
Btw, they used to air a different Euro Top 20 in Germany for a few years but now it seems to be the same.

I can still remember seeing YDUM video for the first time, some girl had taped the charts and we watched it on the way to Barcelona in 1995 on the coach! lol
Wicf said on January 24, 2006 19:39:
I don’t deny QOR was bigger hit than CBB, but #3 for QOR is too high position and on the other hand #19 for CBB is too low... And btw, in UK CBB charted better than QOR... So there’s no logic in ET20
animalkingdom said on January 25, 2006 23:11:
@ above
The MTV Europe countdown has never been too logic - but it’s about “Europe” anyways, not just the UK! Roxette was more hip in 1992 [following the success of Joyride and the How Do You Do single (peaking at #1 on MTV’s chart, btw)] than 1994.
It isn’t about album or single sales, either. Sometimes they air songs that aren’t gaining popularity yet (lately Simple Plan, for example), so I’d say the MTV European Top 20 is, somewhat at least, corrupted. :)

I dont‘t understand why Fingertips‘93 wans‘t on the MTV Top 20.
A brand new version in those days so very well but no hit. I think it was one time in the “Dial MTV” Charts Top 5.

@animalkingdom
Probably! I think even back then if you wanted your video on MTV you had to pay... and it would depend on amount of course... The reason I think that is because one crazy bunch from my town made a crazy underground (back then RAVE) song and when it became hit here they sent it to some night MTV show (can’t remember the name) and paid for it as much as they could... It was played for couple of times...
But it doesn’t have to be true... Trust no one ;)

The last time I saw Roxette on MTV was a few weeks ago. It was The Look on Top Ten At Ten :)

if you ask MTV, Europe = UK :(
