Roxette's Future in the USA
Majdy said on December 9, 2005 23:56:
if DHT can make it in USA, do u think Roxette can make it again there?
AARYN said on December 10, 2005 05:57:
I disagree about SOAP... but ROXETTE could come back *big time* with the right power ballads. SOAP is a little too wierd for americans....
rox-kuryliw said on December 10, 2005 10:39:
per would never make america with out marie, It Would never be poss, marie and per togeather make the perfect pop act :-D.
I think with the biggest monster balled they have done yet and to put it to a movie they would have a hit. If aerosmith can do it, i see why not at all. It depends how well there record company can work for them at end of the day.
Pascal said on December 10, 2005 11:29:
If they make another record like the Room Service one, they won’t be able to conquer the USA again.
What the world needs is another HAND, C!B!B!, Look Sharp record or songs like June Afternoon or She Doesn’t Live Here Anymore.
rox-kuryliw said on December 10, 2005 12:17:
i liked RS , SOme great songs and some what i call album fillers. RS wasnt Daring or rough enough, to clean cut. I wanted more marie gravel voiced and bluesy voiced like on the change and live instruments.
Althougth Entering your heart , was a work of art ? how they missed that hit i have no idea LOL
kingboul said on December 10, 2005 13:01:
@ Pascal : same point of view here ! Only
powerfull pop songs with crashing guitars can do it !
coyboyusa said on December 10, 2005 15:49:
3 things need to happen if they even want a presence in america.
1.) they need to sign with a major lable....not edel not some subsidiary of a label or an independent, they must go major even if it means losing some money to a record company
2.) per and marie need to comit to pormotion, probably 6 months worth.
3.) they can’t simply put out another compilation....people in the states see compilations as coroprate greed. hip hop is slowly heading into the toilet in terms of creativity and popularity, so just like that gap between 80;s new wave and grunge now would be the time for roxette to make a really well polished american top 40 album like joyride, even if its the last thing the 2 of them do together it shoudl be big and 100% roxette
rox-kuryliw said on December 10, 2005 17:42:
again i kind of agree. Quality of song and need a major record label. Not sure they is much place for POP in usa though anymore. I mean the top 40 is so different to Europe music wise. I great song would do it.

If TCOTH had been released and promoted in the USA, it would’ve been a hit, I think. The same goes for Stars... It’s all about promotion, isn’t it?
rox-kuryliw said on December 11, 2005 15:30:
if tcoth was promoted in the UK or even released, it would of done very well on tv music channels and clubs. Seeing that room service album didnt chart in the uk was no suprise, no lead single , no promotion apart from a small ad in a mag ! MATAH was released like 6 months after album came out ? :-/ . VERY poor, not good business at all.
marque said on December 11, 2005 15:41:
I think everything is in promotion...you must have good management, and Roxette didn’t have it in USA...
Room_service said on December 11, 2005 16:49:
I agree, just look at Madonna. She only releases crap, and always hit the #1. Hung Up is a shitty piece of music (all the album, more or less), but it’s selling very well because she has a big promotion organization behind her.
Wicf said on December 11, 2005 19:15:
@Room_service: I don’t think Maddona’s music is bad. But it’s really unfair that Maddona’s had plenty of #1 hits and Roxette have had only six #1 hits, I think (TL, LYTH, IMHBL, Joyride, SIMC, TCOTH). And why? Because of that fu*kin’ promotion!
rox-kuryliw said on December 11, 2005 19:56:
i agree, i think tcoth is better than hung up and far better video aswell. Marie and madonna are same age aswell.
EmEx said on December 11, 2005 20:40:
I think Madonnas latest is ok but nothing special it gets boring quickly.
Kathrin said on December 11, 2005 21:15:
I think it be would be cool if Roxette would come to Castine,Maine!
LoneGunman said on December 11, 2005 22:18:
I think there´s no future for Rox in the USA.
First... Per and specially Marie don´t want to spend 6 months doing promo. That´s a fact. Without promo, no success baby.
Second... Roxette need a big record company and big promotion... don´t think any big record company is interested in Roxette at all. It´s been 13 years ago since the Roxette´s success in America... not even ONE good record company contacted Roxette in all those years ? Why would they do this now ?
As a fan I´m satisfied with the 90-92 smash success... don´t dream about it happening again, cos it won´t.

For the sake of the rest of the world i’d like to see something happen in the USA. But it would be nice at least for the US to have a decent Rox collection/back catologue and give Roxette some presence there at least.
Although they might not want to do the promo work, i’m sure if EMI put a decent advertising campaign behind a release it would help.
If i’m not mistaken when DBUGTTC was released in OZ it didn’t sell at all, till they done a second release with some TV ads etc. and it sold quite well.
marque said on December 12, 2005 11:52:
When we talking ’bout Madonna,I must mention one thing: her “Rain” is a bad copy of Per’s “The Rain”
are we talkin’ bout promotion?:))choruses are sooooo similar(same chords),and who knows “The Rain” besides us,fans...and Per’s “The Rain” is much better than Madonna’s
Majdy said on December 12, 2005 13:35:
I do hope they can. I think they have ability to conquer US again, but they have to do better promotion.
but in other hand, I’m worried that maybe they can’t after seeing songs that played on MTV. I have to be honest, many of the songs are not as near as good as roxette did, but I am afraid that’s what people wants.
kodzume said on December 21, 2005 04:17:
mmm, I wish a more autentically roxette, a roxette of per and marie, more or less promotion is no the question. Is something like ear whatever song but the important thing is the name of Roxette on the song.
I dont wanna this, I guess that marie and per wants good music, they just wanna do art and a lots of fans wanna see they a rox name on top hits, i guess that is so sufish, dont you?
That this matters? What IS the important thing here?
Per, marie... just be you!
all my love

I don’t see Roxette staging a “comeback” in the US, without a major record label promotion. Also, I don’t think they WANT to come back here. Stop and think, they’ve got kids now, families. I can’t see them takin the kids outta school just to do a massive 6 - 12 month blitz in the US. It’s not like Ringling Brothers, Barnum & Bailey Circus (or any other ones) where the kids are born INTO this. These “professions” are all a bit different, so the circumstances are different.
Then there’s the record labels themselves. No one has touched them because if I remember right, they’re still with EMI for a little while longer. EMI sees them as passe, which is a crock of crap, considering how rapidly the music scene’s shifting again. There’s a buch of new rap / hip-hop stars, sure, but they’re rotating in and out faster than I change my boxers (and that’s once a day)!!! So that’s telling you something about the music industry right there.
The Rolling Stones / Aerosmith still have staying power partly BECAUSE they do a serious tour / music promotion. If Roxette wants to stage a comeback, I believe this is one way to go about it:
Work with EMI on promotion. If it means givin them a bit more of the pie, that may be a necessary evil. Song choice. You want something strong to get people to like it. Doesn’t matter if it’s a ballad or a hard core pop song. Others have made solid ballad releases as primary songs, and they’ve done well. Something like Opportunity Nox would work. Don’t count much on VH-1 or MTV. MTV’s retarded, going hip-hop / rap(crap) and reality tv... it’s a useless station. VH-1’s going the same way. The only time they’re good is when they do things like the 80s rebounds and so on (I love 1980-whatever, etc).
Pick your cities. If you’re going to play in New York, play NYC and a couple of others. In California, play LA, San Francisco / Oakland, Sacramento. The northern cities can also cover Oregon / Washington State.Keep your dates down to 1 - 2 per city. You won’t burn out as fast. Or, do smaller venues / clubs and stretch it over about 3 - 4 days. I would rather travel to Los Angeles to see them play at a club, than to see them play at like the Staples Centre or something like that. Clubs are more intimate. Not to mention INFINITELY cheaper on the wallet: Less seats to worry about selling out.
Talk to radio stations. Last time I got “down and dirty” (promoting EAR’s DBUGTTC), I discovered that the station manager at B98.7 is (was?) a Roxette fan. Capitalize on stuff like that. I bet they could do some SERIOUS promoting with that. The question mark comes in because I don’t know if Mr. Keyes is still there or not.
So... that’s my take on it all.

Well we already know Per is trying to get a “new” compilation released in the US. Let’s just hope that it is NOT released worldwide. That would be taking the joke a little too far.
pwbbounce (moderator) said on December 21, 2005 11:14:
I think LS has got a good point there. But I don’t think P/M even care that much anymore about USA. A compliation might work, but P/M wouldn’t have to do any actual work in the studio to do that.
BTW I wouldn’t buy another compliation unless it had at least 4 new songs on it. I DON’T need another IMHBL!!!
n-Somnia said on December 21, 2005 12:23:
I’m thinking there’s a possibility of a success coming again. Lately here in NZ, I’ve noticed some Roxette video clips on our music TV channel (C4) a little more often than usual. A sign? :)
coyboyusa said on December 21, 2005 13:47:
i was thinking the other day , both tina turner and alanis morisette had great success launching albums exclusively through starbiks, per and marie should sit down and do a new unplugged or acoustic album sold exclusively through starbicks, then they could tour small malls and starbucks for instore promotion, simple short and gauranteed success
IV_ROX said on December 21, 2005 16:40:
@coyboy I love Starbucks! Add Roxette to my latte, oh what a lovely day!!!! :P
LittleSpooky said on December 21, 2005 23:07:
See my post in Off Topic somewhere about the mini-discs on pop lids at movie theatres or something like that.
Watch that idea crash and burn, yet again.
roxtexanet said on December 22, 2005 02:00:
@coyboyusa: I actually like your Starbucks idea... it’s the appropriate demographic, and Roxette/EMI already pissed off all of the major retailers back in ’94 with the McDonald’s promotion, so it’s not like they have anything to lose! Besides, if it kicks up some controversy, that can only be a good thing.
I think there might be a future for Roxette in the USA (after all, “Listen To Your Heart” was a top 10 hit again in 2005). But it would really require a major label push and a song that appeals broadly, and I really think the right song in the right movie could do it. It would also have to be something that sells itself... Per and Marie aren’t going to be spending months doing promo in the US (nor should they be). We’ll be lucky at this point to get a few new songs tacked onto the end of a compilation (I won’t be complaining!!).
Roxrider_USA said on December 10, 2005 00:16:
Undoubtedly. Especially with a little bit of promotion and a couple TV appearences.
Even Son Of A Plummer can make it!!! :-)
Take care!
SOAP on!
