I found the last part interesting - the interviewer asked why she didn’t make The Change in Swedish (that was a controversy in Sweden from ppl who thought she should sing in her own language) and she said the Swedish word for Change is too light, it’s like talking about the weather. But the English word “Change” creates powerful feelings in her and she uses the word that has the most feeling. Very interesting.

Marie Fredriksson says that she won’t close any doors on Roxette. But it won’t be the hysterical running around the world on tours and promo. There’s no place for that when life is one day at a time.

“Thank God I’m alive.”
Three years have passed since Marie Fredriksson was struck down by a brain tumour. She says herself the crisis has made her stronger. Furthermore she has found a new love: drawing with charcoal. Today is the last day of her exhibition After The Change at the Doktor Glas gallery in Stockholm. “I’m going to draw more. And sing with Per Gessle. I want enough time to do it all, before it’s too late.”
When life falls apart we find our own way to express ourselves. Marie has chosen to use English. The Change is the name of the album that came out last autumn, 2 years after she fell at home on the bathroom floor and doctors found the reason was a braintumour. The song lyrics dealt with fear and darkness. But also a gratitude to be alive - “Oh thank God i’m alive, I’m alive for the 2nd time.”
“I got a second chance, it feels exactly like that.”
When life gives us a new chance you have to take advantage of it. Marie began to draw. No, that’s wrong. She has always drawn, as long as she can remember, at home, for herself without a demand to perform. The way it happened was something else. She describes it with shining eyes, like she’s in love: one day she was so tired of her old colours and drawing block that she decided to buy a new one. In her paintbox was a little charcoal stick. She took it in her hand - and realised it was her new form of expression.
“It was a shock, a joy. Charcoal has so many nuanses, you can use black, grey, and get soot on your hands. I sat down and began to try it. There are people who know how to do it but I just did it until I found my own - yes, what’s it called?”
Expression?
“Yes, exactly.”

Now 24 of Marie’s drawings are showing at Doktor Glas in Stockholm. The exhibition, which is named After The Change, has lasted a good week and already after 2 days the entire collection has been sold. In the guestbook visitors wrote how moved they were by her naked and bare faces. Moved and touched. “You have with your words and your creations, guided and enriched my life,” wrote one woman - and one man wrote “Wonderful. Life is what you make it. Powerful!”
How does it feel to get such strong response?
“Fantastic. I am so proud.”
We sit opposite each other in manager Dimberg’s office, in a small and tidy sofa corner.
This is one of the few interviews that Mare does this autumn and I’ve been promised a maximum of one hour. She is more delicate and pale than I imagined after TV images. Dressed in jeans and a stripey jacket, she sits straight in her chair and answers my questions. Friendly, almost courteous. But also with a clear distance. In a moment she will talk about the need for integrity that she has always had. Without that need she would never have coped with Roxette’s super career, all the trips around the world, all the attention and interviews.

“You have to set a limit. When people are constantly pulling you, you must set a limit, take a break, otherwise you won’t make it. At the same time, in the middle of all of this, I’m the same as I’ve always been. A totally normal and ordinary person who grew up in a tiny village in Skåne.
She still has a dialect, the rolling r which neither world tours nor all the years in Stockhholm has managed to take away. Skanian (Marie’s dialect) can’t be thought of as beautiful, but it is part of what makes her so natural, which she sees as her strength.
At the same time she loves to be a star, a real star. “To get up on stage and sing in front of a big audience - oh, that’s intense. It is a game I’ve always loved since I was little and stood in front of a 3 part mirror in Östra Ljungby. In one mirror I saw myself as a singer, in the other an actress. I have lived in those dreams as long as I can remember.”
The art exhibition After The Change also deals with dreams. To realize this dream that grew with a number of charcoal drawings at home in her Djursholm house.
“Earlier I also painted when life was hard, but you can’t compare it with the last few years. So the exhibition finally came about. At last you can pull yourself together and make your dreams reality.”
Why is that important?
She pauses for a moment, as if to check if I’m joking or not. For her the answer is self evident:
“Time goes so fast, then life is over. If you have a dream, which I think all people have, you must make it reality now. The disease has taught me that we can’t afford to wait. Everything must be done now - because it is now that we are alive.
How were you before?
“Then I worked the whole time. The year with Roxette was fully planned, we knew what we would do both months and years ahead. But it passed me by then. Today I live a totally different life. Now I know what you can get out of every day - if you don’t just lie around like before, purely mentally. There is such power in what you see and want and can do right now.”
She really doesn’t want to talk about her illness, not anymore. She almost begs to change the subject, because she prefers to look forward - not dwell on what has been. On the other hand out go both her pictures and her latest album from the illness time. Therefor we’ll take it then, very quickly:
It was 11 September 2002 when she fainted after jobbing. There were no warning signs, it was a total shock. After the operation there was a long road back waiting for her.
How do you feel today?
“Good. Really good. The treatments are over. I still take a few medications but it’s nothing difficult at all.”

roxtexanet: Nah, not really, Swedish is my 2nd language and English is my 1st so I just read and write what I see. I think it’s much harder to translate into English if it’s not your first language, which explains the dreadful grammar in the Rox Reviews!

“It’s hard to put it into words. But I can say that everyone in the family has become so much stronger. My voice has also changed, it’s darker. Although I think it’s cool.” Marie Fredriksson is married to musician/producer Mikael Bolyos, together they have children Josefin and Oscar, who are 12 and 9. When she speaks about them joy glows over her face. Their birth changed her life, made her change direction and make new priorities.
“It’s so positive. And so great. We have a house full of music, just like I did when I was little. Both Josefin and Oscar love to play and sing, which we encourage in every way. Just like my parents encouraged me. Even if my mother could be anxious. I remember when I got the offer to make my first solo album and rang home to my little village. ’It should be ok,’ said Mamma. ’As long as you don’t fall into drugs.’”
