Who is this "Laengtan"?

Hello:
I’ve seen this person usually has Rox stuff for sale on eBay. But I did realize he/she doesn’t show who is the current high bidder. It says “User ID kept private”. I think that’s not very transparent. Common stuff usually reach high and very expensive prices on his auctions, I wonder why.
I think he bids on his own auctions, just to push the prices up, that the reason he/she hides the high bidder ID.
What do you think about? Is that fair or not?

Hey nobody said Ebay’s cheap... I must say i like to browse ebay every now&then but i think it’s a load of bull****, honestly! I know my prices well & when i want something i WONT pay more because it’s a so-called rare pressing!! Sooner or later I will find the item for less!

This sounds very strange to me. Surely if you big on your own items then you end up paying large eBay seller fees for not selling the item! Or is the idea that occasionally someone will outbid him or her on a massively overpriced item and then all the money and more is made back? Wierd.

I had this conversation with someone the other night on the phone..... we noticed some of his current auctions are going for crazy prices....
Feelings are he / she bids on own stuff, which is against ebay rules..... if in doubt report to eBay and ask them to look at the IP addresses of the bidders...
Personally I would not bid on anyone who hides bidders...

When you list something for sale on eBay, you are able to see how many people is “watching” that item. It means, people interested on the item that have bookmarked it, though they are not bidding on (yet). When someone place a bid on his items (I think he’s a guy), I bet he uses and alternative ID to outbid that person, because he knows more people is watching for the item, and they are ready to overbid him. I think that’s the point. He doesn’t wanna be the winner, he just wants to increase the price. And yes, some auctions are running for crazy prices! Like the 2-CD set of “You Don’t Understand Me”, for about 16 euro. I bought those CD’s from 2 different sellers, both in mint/unplayed condition for about 2 GBP each... I guess he’s pushing up those auctions!
By the way, I see no other reason to hide the high bidder. I don’t wanna be suspicious, but that’s the only reason I have in mind.

It also makes me suspicous when a seller hides the names of the bidders. Although I must admit that I have dealt with “LAENGTAN” several times and they were all smooth transactions. No problems at all.
@purplemedusa
I agree with you about rare items. I never pay ridiculous amounts of money for so called hard to find items. I’d rather wait until they pop up somewhere else for a much lower price. And I have succeeded many times in this.

I also bought some items from laengtan. it was a nice deal and I am very happy with it.

Haven’t this person been discussed here before?!
“laengtan” is for you who don’t know it a German person called Rene Rebhan. I also bought one thing from him and eventhough that specific record was not the condition he claimed I still think he is a friendly person. But how honest he is I can of course not say, cuz that I don’t know...

Yes per-mson, this topic has been discussed before:

I am getting strong feelings about this person being a con. Yesterday I bid for Nevending Love - French 12” and was outbid by 2 other people. Within 20 minutes of the auction finishing I had a 2nd chance offer for this. It is not the first time that this has happened.
sandyam said on October 10, 2005 17:41:
Exactly the same thing has happened to me several
times with this seller. In fact it occured even two days ago. It does make me a little suspicious now.
ally77 said on October 11, 2005 08:19:
The best thing to do is avoid them, or even still report your susp to eBay...
per_mson said on October 15, 2005 22:12:
At Tradera he used to bid over himself with a nickname called “Laengtan” (since he is called by his real name there). Not so smart since he used Laengtan on Ebay.... ;) Now I suspect he changed that to “RoxetteStar”. I guess it all got too obvious when we talked about it here...
imazombieinthem... said on October 21, 2005 11:43:
There is no doubt he/she is dodgy. This seller is just very smart the way they go about it to avoid getting caught. Private bidding auctions usually always lesson the price of the item at auction. Laengtan cleans up every time :/
Its not hard to log into other computers to avoid the ip address matching. Also, most ISPs have a few different number you can use. Changing them always give you a new ip address.
ally77 said on October 21, 2005 15:43:
I am surprised they don’t come here to support themselves, it does not look good....
per_mson said on October 22, 2005 09:04:
You don’t even have to log in on other computers to change your IP number. I have a neat little program called “Hide IP” that is doing the job for you. That one generates a new IP every time you want it to. So even if you are sitting in say UK it can still look like you are from Japan.
So that way I guess it is impossible to tell Ebay that he is a cheater.

The answer to this is simple: He always sends second chance offers to the ones who placed the highest bid after himself.
Sparvogamarie said on August 21, 2005 03:56:
You should report it to Ebay, they have ways to find out if this person is bidding on himself.
