The magazine “Cupé” wich is a free paper on the goverment railroad in Sweden has made a list over the most succesfull music groups in Sweden. Abba is ofcourse number one and Roxette is ofcourse number two, here is the list...I am not sure if I recall everything correctly and some groups may have switch places with eachother.
1. Abba, over half a billlion records
2. Roxette, 42 million records and 15 millon singels
3. Ace of Base, 32 million records and 15 million singels
4. Europe
5. Rednex
6. Dr. Alban
7. Cardigans
8. A-Teens
9. Emilia
10. Eagle Eye Cherry
Some bands like Army of Lovers is not in the list beacuse it is so hard to get the right facts about them, but every group on the list has sold over 5 million albums.

I think Roxette’s numbers are slightly outdated... Does anyone know how many records ABBA sold in their “active” period 1974-1982?
James_Earp said on April 19, 2005 10:29:
it is true, “big big world” was one of the biggest hits that year in many places. And we all now how much one song can do.
About the roxette numbers I think the same, but I just took the numbers from the paper. And I guess they got it from the recordcompany.
It is pretty funny or maybee I should say horrible that Rednex has the record of most weeks at the top spot on the german singelchart (I think it was the singelchart), Modern Talking is number two.
Ingo said on April 25, 2005 18:44:
In their active time between 1972 and 1982 ABBA had sold more than 180 million records and nearly the same amount after their separation with dozens of Best of Albums until right now.
animalkingdom said on April 25, 2005 19:15:
Cardigans seem pretty underrated based on their record sales...Hehe Rednex & Mr Alban above them! Neat!

EUROPE and ROXETTE is the best music group!!
Europe have sold around 12-15 000 000 albums around the world ,and it´s great that they are back!!
the tour around the world now!

I doubt you do remember right...You and artists’ sales figures haven’t really gone hand in hand...

and think that Emilia participated in such a German TV contest for “lost stars” in order to get a record deal again.. *sad*
PS: she CAN’T sing!

ABBA was on the right place on the right time..
but what a brilliant sale after that..
Yestarday i was in a music shopp and the DVD-GH was so cheap-11 euro, not strange that they sell so much!!
Staffany said on April 26, 2005 06:43:
Well, I have bought Roxette stuff for 1 euro too. It doesn’t mean anything...

I hate abba with passion. And not only album sales are overrated, I find it hard to get how did they reach that number - neither of their album is in Top Selling Records list - http://www.classicbands.com/bestsellers.html

@ Mishar_McLeud
ABBA’s popularity never truly reached the USA, so that’s why you won’t find their albums listed on the “Top 100 Albums According To U.S. Recording Industry Sales Figures”.
As for why you hate them, I don’t understand why. They made great music that have stood the test of time. Why? ’Cause those records are great. There must be a reason why a musical based on their songs is seen by 15,000 people every night :-)
Yes, I’m an ABBA devotee and I promise I wouldn’t be if they hadn’t made bloody great records, though :-)
Mishar_McLeud said on May 7, 2005 22:48:
I can imagine how many best-off’s the band has to release to hit half a billion of records. Something that KISS or Ozzy’s wife would have done (or are actually doing :) )
About my opinion on ABBA, when you have your parents popping in the tape while on the way to school and then back home you can start hating everything (same why I don’t listen to Beatles). Their stuff reminds me a lot of Mireille Mathieu (The Winner Takes It All for example), and it’s a true blashpamy IMO. Plus I always get into flaming debates with my elder ones who claim ABBA being beyond the level where Roxette is, and I think it’s all the way wrong. But that’s what opinions are for :)

Mireille Mathieu did a cover version of The Winner Takes It All shortly after ABBA released theirs. She travelled to Stockholm and recorded it at ABBA’s studio, with Benny and Björn producing the recording. They were even joined by Frida to provide backing vocals!
Benny Andersson is a musical genius. He writes in incredibly varied styles. From his 1960s boyband pop songs to ABBA’s 1970s masterpieces, to ’Chess - The Musical’ in the 1980s... His 1990s epic ’Kristina från Duvemåla’ is astounding. He even manages to have enjoyed #1 chart hits with his 21st century albums and - even - singles.
He’s up there with the greats, but I accept that many people won’t realise this until long after his death.

Well, I think ABBA of course is the most sucessful band from Sweden.
But Roxette got a more modern look, and modern music.
I love both of them
And I love both Agnetha and Marie. :-)
Mishar_McLeud said on May 11, 2005 18:15:
I still think Roxette is more talented band that ABBA :). Hell, more than 95% of the bands I know for that matter!
BTW Sweden always amazes me with the ammount of really cool bands it produces. Take recent glam metal Crashdiet or hard rock House Of Shakira for example. Must be a legacy of Vikings or something.

I don’t listen ABBA records usually at the moment, but i was a fan of their music for a lot of years, i find their huge talent unquestionable (for each member of the group)...
Roxette is nice, but with an unevenness quality, ABBA is the perfection. Sorry :)
Anyway, to be more constructive, i love the colaboration Frida-Marie in ’Alla Mina Bästa År’

Abba’s sales figures are completely overrated and it is just an estimate! I am not just saying that, it is a fact, I have read that on many websites, Abba Websites actually. I will post a link as soon as I find one again. I believe, they actually only sold about 100 Million Records.
And Roxette’s number is clearly underestimated. When Crash! B! B! was released, one of the biggest German Radio stations stated, Roxette has sold more than 60 Million Records already, now, that didn’t even include the full figures of C!B!B! Not sure if they were right, but it is a radio Station, that does not just make up the stuff they say. Station is, Radio Schleswig Holstein / RSH.
per_mson said on May 20, 2005 08:38:
Does it really matter how many records ABBA vs. Roxette sold? ABBA is still selling well, but Roxette is getting harder and harder to find in the stores I think. So face it, even though it doesn’t matter; ABBA will never be beaten by Roxette in sales figures.

The data given
“1. Abba, over half a billlion records
2. Roxette, 42 million records and 15 millon singels”,
is there really someone claiming that Roxette still could over-sell ABBA? o_0
James_Earp said on May 20, 2005 13:19:
@ebay
when Roxette realesed “Don’t bore us....” (not the US version) they got a platinum (or something) record by EMI beacuse they had sold more than 40 or 50 million records (I’m not sure) but that does not really matter. According to EMI roxette had not at that point sold over 60 million records and I doubt that they have done it now.
