I guess you have the rights to use the melody + translate the song? ;)

hmmm... the lyrics sound really cheesy to me... like Disney meets Claudia Jung... i don’t know about marie’s Swedish lyrics. Maybe they are as cheesy, but since I like Swedish much and don’t understand it fully, it just sounds nicer...
i never thought of Marie singing ’Schlager’, when i listen to Schmetterling it has ’Schlager’ written all over it. :(
but thanks for sharing and I know its horrible to get negative feedback. so, sorry for that, but you wanted to get feedback, I guess...

Good question, Judith!
Anyway: Sounds nice! But the lyrics are BAD!

The lyrics are okay, but the original text is more deeper in it’s meaning. You tried to keep phrases from the original and bring it into a more German context. That is a good idea.
But in the end it’s very hard to translate a song: you are another “writer” and you use another “language” than the original composer.
By the way, I write songs, too, in German and English language (just type in “Melancholodic” in google, if you’re interested). But so far I NEVER succeeded to translate not even one of MY OWN Lyrics from German into English or the other way round. There get’s to much lost, and the languages are so different.
I think you should dare to bring more of your own into this song. The original and very serious theme (being young and having all you life in front of you, but with limited time) is much better transported with the swedish lyrics than with this “butterfly”-metapher.
The Arrangement is almost identical to the original version. Why not making a new, an own song, out of it. Imagine that you wrote it yourself, and that you only had the lyrics, the melody and the chords. Now sit down and find an own arrangement for it. Give it an own structure, own intrumental-melodies and so on.
I’m not a fan of coverversions, because they often have no “own” message. but a very few I like. For example the “Strange little Girls”-Album by Tori Amos contains only cover-versions, but never the less, they became Tori-Songs. Or listen to Gessles “Sheena is a punkrocker”. Then you know what I mean!
Your problem with this arrangement is, that you always will be compared to Marie’s original, when you try to copy it.
But if I should review it just as a song without knowing the original (which should be the case for listeners in Belgium) it’s a good recording. Could sound a little bit more up to date, but the vocal-takes, the recording and mix are okay. It’s what we call “Schlager” here in Germany, but not in a negative way!
But please remove the “vinyl-jitters” :-) Sounds not nostalgic to me, but like a failed Nero-Rip in those “digital” days.
Have a nice day,
Mario.

When Marie sings it she touches me but I don’t feel anything while this woman sings the song. Sorry...

lennon!!! well said!
tori amos’ cover versions on strange little girls are great... she once said that she feels there is no point in doing a cover version if you don’t have a point... make the song one of your own, rather than just copy it!!!
i fully agree about the arrangement comment... i mean this is a totally late 80-ies early 90-ies song, so even if we like the arrangement, it just seems a bit dusty in 2005, soundwise...
and also the lyrical aspect... i agree, you tried to stay with the original text, but often something like that doesn’t fully work... maybe you needed to free yourself from that cage... maybe you could capture the original spirit and keep true to the original without staying so close to the text?!? bla bla... sorry, i know it’s easy to sit here in the comfy chair and criticise... i appreciate it very much that you shared your efforts with us
and the production sounds professional. i for my taste just think that this is a different genre we’re talking about. Marie is pop. your singer sounds Schlager (what is that in English?!? easy listening?!?)
take care

OMG what has happened to one of my favourite songs...??? It sounds like a Schlager and the lyrics are horrible...I definitely prefer Marie’s version...!!!
Bibi said on June 10, 2005 20:02:
Hej Arlanda :-)!
The Swedish lyrics are quite deep but I think the lyrics are what you call in German KITSCH.
