Computer nerd needed NOW!!!

Oi... I’m soooo screwed right now & hope that there’s someone that’ll be able to help me...
Been having trouble with me mouse for the last couple of hours... and thought that it was just me exhuasting the PC and I restarted her only to get a message saying that Windows does not see my mouse (or something like that)... restarted a couple o more times and no luck getting the mouse to work... I’ve managed to dialup & connect to TDR via some basic knowledge of keyboard shortcuts!! Anyways I’m really needcing to get my mouse to work as I have some design jobs to do & it’ll go rather difficult designing with the tabs & up/down keys!!
Any good-hearted people that could be of some help here... give me some idea how to fix this issue? Is it fixable... god i hope so!!!

Hey Steven... thanks for standing in for the ever-illusive nerds!!
Mmm... Say something in the lines of Windows found no mouse... and that it’s safe to plug a mouse in - like duh, I would go and remove my mouse hey!! ... and it’s a PT2 or something in that lines... and I forgot what your third question was... oh! no, i don’t have a spare mouse - not that stocked up just yet! Busy running a virus scan at the moment... just hoping it ain’t the case... tell me once the scann is done and it happened to be a nasty lil virus should everything return to normal again??
purplemedusa said on December 6, 2004 19:54:
Not PT2... PS2... gosh this is really challenging / redefining surfing online!! LOL
steven said on December 6, 2004 20:02:
Ok... so the mouse is possibly a PS2 connection? (small round plug, normally green in colour and has several tiny pins)? If that is what you are using then ANY version of windows will simply recognise it once it’s pluged in. (A restart would be required if you plug in the mouse while Windows is already running).
Your fault is unlikely to be virus related (although not impossible). Typical cause would either be a break in the cable due to natural wear and tear or perhaps the tiny pins in the plug have become slightly bent and are not making proper contact.
Too make matters worse, if the problem is due to a break in the cable, then even if you were to find that break and somehow fix it, Windows would not recognise the connection until you restart. So you could be there all evening!
My advice would be to borrow one of a friend for a few minutes to establish if the fault lies with either the mouse or the PC.
Good luck!

Yeah... the green one!!
Okays... will keep ya posted - thank for the help Steven! Your a STAR :D
Atleast i got an extention on the designs so I’m not gonna bother much further tonight! I’m actualy starting to get the hang of surfin without a mouse now... even figured out how to rightclick!!
*surflin like they did it in ’84* (hey that could b a son title)

Keep us posted :P
purplemedusa said on December 6, 2004 20:50:
Mind u the printer has been doing funny things lately too... will resume the virus scan then!!
harriej said on December 6, 2004 21:04:
Did you already try to search for new hardware after pluggin in the mouse?
Start/Settings/Control Panel/ Add-Remove New Hardware
Good luck
purplemedusa said on December 6, 2004 21:11:
Harriej... I never took it out - only once before restarting & replaced it again... so i guess no need to add hardware... will c if another mouse does the trick 2morrow but in the mean time i’m running the virus scan.
BTW anyone knows if F-secure virus software updates itself or do you have to manually update the bugger... (i’d check myself but surfin ain’t very easy right now LOL)
harriej said on December 6, 2004 21:17:
Usually there is somewhere in the Anti-virus software a place where they tell when the last update was done.
If it is more then a week ago, it is not up to date (sometimes it updates even every day).
In that case, update it manually
purplemedusa said on December 6, 2004 21:25:
*roll on the floor with laughter* And how do u suppose I navigate the virus software without a mouse -> I tried & evertime i catch my hands moving towards the mouse... blah... it’s a mouse’s world!!
harriej said on December 6, 2004 21:50:
FORMAT C:
Re-install windows
Your mouse will be recognized !
(if the mouse itself is not broken)
Be Aware:
Do this only as a last attempt.
Format will destroy all your data on the C-drive!

Can you remeber what you did just before the mouse stopped working?
Did you install certain software or hardware?
If so, bring it back to the previous state (uninstall that hard- or software).
I guess you already checked whether you don’t have a I/O or IRQ-conflict?
(Start/Settings/Control Panel/System/Device Manager)
If you see a yellow exclamation mark, that usually is a sign that you have a hardware-conflict.
Did you already try an other mouse on the same ps/2 port or on the COM1-serial port?
Or otherwise: Try to startup in safe mode (during startup, press F8 and choose safe mode).
If the mouse works in this mode, it means there is a wrong driver somewhere.

normaly antivirus update themselves.. but sometimes you have to tell the program to do so in the “options” - I never heard of that AV anyway.
Online tests:
* Panda AV’s active scan:
http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/com/activescan_principal.htm
* Symantec’s removal tools: http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/tools.list.html
* McAfee:

>> Free Scan
Not sure if it’s a virus though...

if nothing’s weird in the control panel..
if you press the ctrl+alt+del keys at the same time, the “windows task manager” > processes (to move from tab to tab press on ctrl+tab at the same time), what processes are working?

hmm looks like i’m late to offer some help.
My mouse started acting up one day last week, then after i restarted it just wouldn’t work even though windows detected it. Maybe yours gave up the ghost as well??
purplemedusa said on December 7, 2004 09:33:
Thank u sooo much for the assistance, guys!!!

Jud (moderator) said on December 7, 2004 17:16:

Some questions for you...
1. What does the error message say?
2. What Mouse connection is it? PS2, USB or old style serial?
3. Do you have another mouse to try/borrow so that you can establish whether the fault lies with the PC or mouse?
4. Which version of Windows are you using?
